By midday, my feet and back were aching and I was kicking myself for not bringing any water. My stomach rumbled loudly, only adding to my growing list of discomforts. And I had to pee. The day was beautiful, at least. The sky above was scattered with puffy clouds and a cool breeze kept it from being too hot. I thanked God for small mercies. The hours of walking alone, however, left far too much time to think. I thought about Tabitha, about Adaline, about the Council, my family, the insane turn my life had taken.
