22 LAVINIA I hid behind a lonely rock in this forsaken, desert land, and held my breath. Several yards from the rock, a creature with bluish skin sniffed the air. I pressed a hand to my mouth to keep from yelping, or even breathing too loud. The other hand pressed to the side of my head, where a small bump had formed. I believed I had hit my head and fainted when I entered the box. When I came to, I was in a dark, dry, desert land. At first, I panicked because of the darkness, but this place was open and never ending. The dark part still got to me, but the lightning and thunder came frequent enough—and it scared the hell out of me—that it illuminated the place some.
