CHAPTER THIRTY
Lee Wilson had worked for the highway department for twenty-nine years and seven months. Only five months to go until retirement. It wasn’t going to be the celebratory event that he had envisioned almost three decades before when he had taken the job at his father’s urging. “Full benefits and retire before you are sixty,” his dad had said. “You can’t beat it with a stick. And the state boys don’t exactly work themselves to death.” So Lee had begun as a sign installer, eventually learned to drive a loader which was used to fill trucks with gravel, sand and salt, and eventually obtained his CDL which enabled him to drive the big state dump trucks.
