“You really shouldn’t be up and about yet Sera” Doc limply tried to persuade her. “Bed rest is what the Doctor ordered.” He smirked, he always loved Doctor puns.
“I’ve been in that damn bed for 10 days now! Surely my Doctor recommends some exercise, fresh air?” Sera joked back. George, who was walking beside Sera holding her hand, pulled her along the infirmary corridors .
“I can’t wait to show you everything Sera! My favourite tree to climb, pond to skip rocks in. Ooh, ooh, and...” He stopped dead, turned on his heel and ushered Sera down to his level. “...my most secretest” He whispered, stopping to glare at his mum and Doc. They started admiring a painting on the wall. “My most secretest place, it’s a Faye circle.” Sera smiled sweetly.
“Secret, darling. Not secretest. But still adorable.” She nudged his chin, smiled back at Doc and Lucy, who most definitely did not hear his secret with their advanced Lycan hearing , and who were most definitely not sharing a small laugh, and carried on being dragged down the corridor.
“I’m glad you’re awake, I was scared you wouldn’t wake up. Mummy was scared too, she says she wasn’t but she was trying to be brave for me. Doc was doing everything he could, Clara and Helena would take me out exploring to try and keep me occupied.”
“They have , have they? I would have thought a charming lad like you would have made plenty of friends by now?” By everyone’s awkward reactions Sera regretted the question. George stood silent next to her, she looked at the mark on his arm fainter than the others but still there. She knelt beside him. “I’m sorry sweet, I didn’t mean to upset you.”
“They stare at me.” He tried to fight them back but his eyes welled up. “I know you taught me to be proud, to not be ashamed, but none of the kids want to play with me. They call me half spawn.” He said the last part so softly quiet, but a slight shudder from Lucy gave away she heard it. Docs glare gave away he heard it too.
“Now you listen here George Hurley Barnes.” Sera took him by his shoulders. “You are the son of the most wonderful mother that ever lived. Your godfather is this world greatest healers and your godmother, well... she could be better.” George laughed gently, and wiped the tears from his eyes. “But all I have, all I am, and all I will ever be I would give to you...”
“...for I am the darkness and the light...” Continued Lucy.
“...the soldier, healer and might...” Joined Doc.
“...that binds us together true.” Finished George.
Now for anyone who would come upon this touching scene would notice 3 things: 1, The obvious upset child with 3 adults cuddling him. 2, A strong sense of bond between all 4. And 3, That for a split moment, quicker then you could blink, the matching marks on their arms all glowed slightly. This third wasn’t noted by Theo as he rounded the corner, who seemed more taken by the upset child , but most definitely by Bella who instinctively reached for the dagger in her belt before thinking she perhaps saw nothing. The 3 adults picked themselves up as Theo cleared his throat and offered a handkerchief to George. Who promptly used it to blow his nose and hide behind his wall of protectors.
“Ahem, I’m Theodore Carmichael. Alpha of the Azure Moon Pack, whose land you find yourself on. And quite safe I must add.” Noticing Sera taking a step in front of the others, he thought how strange a human would go to protect Lycans. “I presume you are the one they call Sera?”
“Seraphim.” She corrected. Only her family got to call her Sera, well them and that lying, two faced, scheming, son of a swamp hag Kristopher.
“Seraphim. I had heard you were awake but didn’t expect to find you walking I’ll be honest, a human with your injuries could have easily died.”
“You should see the other guy.” Quipped Sera, still not budging from her front line spot.
“I’m sure, but alas we’ve not been able to recover Lord Tyreens body from the rumble.”
Lord Tyreen, Lord. Even after what he’s done he’s still a bloody Lord to them. It was a thought shared by all 3 simultaneously.
Theo was doing his best to avoid looking at Lucy and rather at the rather deep gash above Seraphims left cheekbone. “You can call me Theo, and I was very much hoping to discuss with you about your time at the Red Sun Pack.” Bella grimaced, Doc chuckled, Lucy tensed but Sera just stared at this Alpha.
“I have a kind of rule, a common sense stay alive idea really which is to not sit down and have a chat with a smug, arrogant Alpha who makes it sound like we were at a spa retreat being treated with margaritas and foot rubs all day rather than what it was!” Sera seethed, Bella reached for her dagger. “Let’s cut the fancy shall we, you want to know who, what, where, why, when and how. And I for one am not prepared to have that conversation with someone who still calls that monster a Lord.” The word was bitter in her mouth, and she hadn’t taken her eyes off Theo. “I would take your hand off that dagger Beta as well, your Alpha has nothing to fear from me if he let’s me and my people go.” A laugh was shared between Alpha and Beta, Theo took a step back and rubbed the bridge of his nose.
“I see some stories about you are true then?” He had dropped his Alpha persona. “I heard you were a fighter, but the balls on you to square up to an Alpha in his territory. With Jo’s Beta by his side and declare you’re not on a threat.” He laughed again. “You must be some kind of wonderful.” Sera was taken aback, she expected a laugh but not... a compliment.
“Excuse me?” A little voice peeped out from behind his mother’s leg. “Mr Alpha Theo Sir?”
“You little one...” Theo went to take a step towards George but decided against it and bent down instead. “You can call me Theo too.” He said with a smile. “What can I do for you?”
“Erm...” George looked at his mother, then at Doc, took a step towards Sera and took her hand. “Is everyone on these lands your people?” Theo nodded. “And they do as you ask, or command?” He nodded again. “Do you think you could ask them if they like to play baseball? I’ve always wanted to play but never had enough team mates and playing against grown ups just isn’t fair.” Probably as intended, the group lightened up and laughed.
“I think I could do that.” Chuckled Theo standing up.
“Actually...” Began George. Sera, Lucy and Doc shared a look, they knew where this was going. “How about a bet?”
“What sort of bet?” Theo raised an eyebrow, Bella leaned against the wall admiring her Alpha getting played by a 7 year old kid.
“You make a team of say...” George counted in his head. “5. To play against my team of 5. If you win you get to ask any and all questions you want and we will answer them truthfully.” He smiled confidently at Sera. “And if you lose then you have to...” He pondered, what would you ask an Alpha for? Doc seized the opportunity and muttered something into George’s ear, a beam shot across his face. “You, my dear friend Theo have to take my mother on a date.”
For the first time in their encounter Lucy and Theo looked at each other.
“Sweetie, how about asking for something else?” Lucy flushed, punching the laughing Doc in the arm.
“Relax Mum, he won’t lose. Will you?” Theo was flummoxed, he couldn’t exactly back out of a challenge given by a kid but didn’t want to give his want away. He looked at Bella, who simply raised her hands and shrugged.
“I won’t lose.” He shook the boys hand and smiled. This game would be a bit of fun, increase morale of his people. If he won he got the answers he wanted, if he lost he won a date with the most gorgeous woman he’d ever met. No, he thought. I won’t lose.
