Chapter 1: Simon
Wow.
That’s all I have to say as I drive through the large town of Snowport.
I inhale a breath that’s so clear that I almost choke. Correction. That I actually choke on. Jesus it’s like someone plugged in a giant humidifier and cleaned the air twice in a row! It was nice though, nothing like the dirty city air that I was used to.
I open the window and tiny snow flurries dance around me, as if it’s a dance ritual to welcome my arrival. I chuckle at that thought. Who the hell would welcome me anywhere? I was a nobody and honestly I preferred it.
I drove past cute shops and bakeries before turning down stanford street.
Mind link:
Axel: So this is our new home?
‘Yup.’
Axel: I don’t like it, keep driving.
I roll my eyes as I look for my new home. Once I spot the familiar house, I immediately pull into the driveway.
‘Okay, check for us.’
Axel: No
‘Come on buddy please! I’m freezing my ass off!!’
Axel: So then let’s shift and get out of here. I’ll keep us warm.
‘Please….I hate the constant moving round too but I’m protecting us...please’
I earn a soft whimper from him before he lifts our nose up to check the area.
Axel: Nobody’s scent is around, it’s safe
‘Thanks buddy’
Axel: ….will this be the last time?
‘I sure hope so.’
He sighs before retreating into the deeper parts of my mind. To sulk most likely. Wolves shared a mind and soul with their human so we were pretty much two entities sharing one body. I loved my wolf to death, he was literally like the brother I never had...and the only family I ever had.
Don’t get me wrong, I had a family but only because of the blood we shared. They didn’t love each other or cared like a real family should do in my opinion, they never counted.
I don’t know how long I was in my thoughts, but it was long enough before I realized that I was turning the key to enter my new home.
Wow.
Good going Axel!!
I smiled softly as I felt his purring in my head. He’d done a great job picking out the place, not just because we was able to talk the realtor down on the price, but because he literally picked the most gorgeous home we’ve ever lived in. The walls were stone, with a deep brown hardwood floor. The living room had a cozy fireplace and the best part? Completely furnished!!!!
We moved quite often and we did something to always make it a little more fun. We would take turns picking the place. When it’s my turn to pick, I block him out while looking for a place so he doesn’t know what it looks like until we move. When it’s his turn, he does the same so one of us is always surprised when we finally see it on moving day.
Mind link:
‘Seriously, thank you brother. This really just feels like home you know?’
Axel: “I’m glad you love it because I felt the same way when I saw it. The fur on my body literally stood up.”
We both chuckled before closing the door and doing a sweep of the house. After everything was confirmed safe, I went to work installing new curtains and putting away kitchenware. I didn’t care if the last owners left pots, I was so not about to eat from them. Who knows what nasty s**t they might’ve been cooking! I looked at my handy work before grabbing my keys and heading out the door.
After all, what’s a new home with no food to go with it?
I drive around aimlessly while taking in my surroundings. I was never one to use gps when I first move into a town. I like to learn where things are myself, it’s easier that way. It allows me to memorize scents and sights in case of emergencies.
The town is way bigger and busier than I thought but yet it gave off a homey, comforting feeling. That was rare. I drove until I picked up the smell of faint rubber and a lot of metal.
Shopping carts.
I was definitely near one and as soon as that thought entered my head, I saw a huge Walmart down the road. I smiled and bounced in my seat. Nothing made me happier than a bargain and at Walmart, that’s all there was. I happily found a space and jumped out my car, snatching a stray cart out the parking lot.
The glass doors opened and my senses were immediately attacked by the smell of pastries and other delicious goodies. Of course the main entrance was next to the bakery section. It was like the moon goddess herself was laughing, knowing well I couldn’t control myself around sweets. I groaned in protest but my body ignored me, wheeling the cart towards the cookies in record time. I grabbed 24 pc box of sugar cookies, a small tray of blueberry muffins with sugar crystals on top, and two small 50 cent apple pies.
After shaking my head at my little self control, I carried on with my business, smiling and bobbing my head to the music they played throughout the store. Half way through my shopping, my wolf stirred uneasily.
Mind link:
‘What’s wrong?’
Axel: I’m not sure but just keep your head up and be aware of your surroundings.
‘Something I need to really worry about?’
Axel: No, it’s the opposite actually. It’s something really….good
‘Good? Like what?’
Axel: I don’t know but I’ll tell you as soon as I do.
Confused but not bothering to pay it any mind, I went back to my shopping and my store music. I was surprised when I heard Cardi B on the microphone and silently laughed to myself. I think Walmart needs to rethink their idea of “family appropriate” shopping music. With that thought in mind, I finish up my shopping and head to the register. After paying and packing up my groceries, I head to my card and load up the trunk. I’m nearly done when I stop and look up ahead.
No…
I throw the rest of my bags in before I slam it close and high tail it to my front seat. I hear someone screaming my name but I can’t quite understand. I’m in a full panic and race out the parking lot, almost running over a stop sign and someone’s bike in the process.
I hit the glass and floor it, tears blurring my vision as the screams now sound more clear. It’s Axel and he’s screaming my name before fully taking control. Once he’s in control he slows down the car immediately and pulls over to the side of the road.
Mind link:
Axel: It was a false alarm, relax.
‘But what if-‘
Axel: False alarm. You need to calm down okay? I would’ve picked up the scent. We’re safe and I’ll always protect you. Remember us against the world.
I nodded before fully regaining control and breaking down crying in the car.
This fear was no way to live.
