Moira opened the door and Maera tip toed to see who were the participants of the happy murmurings heard from outside: she could see there were about seven men in their early 20's and 30's and three of them sat on the sofa, the other three was playing a card game with Mr. Ramond the game was called "estimate" and one was sitting beside the player's spectating the game and as the girls and Saloz, came in, Mrs. Ramond, who was just coming out of her bedroom door asked them "if you need anything, there's still food in the kitchen" "no thanks answered Moira, we had dinner with the Fairs," "okay then come and meet these men they all work in the fish factory and are all here with the intention of welcoming you girls to their isolated island of Sandry." So if you care to join in and play with them, you're very welcome to join" "yeah but you better be good in the game, cos this island is so lonely and boring that these men has been playing it all the days of their lives to cover up their loneliness." Hahaha everyone was laughing and the girls joined in the laughing, another man added;"he's lying the truth is, rumour went around the factory that two beautiful girls arrived this morning on our island, and are staying with the Ramonds, and as some of us are relatives of Ramond and some, of his wife and some are friends;we, who usually come here to enjoy playing card games with Ramond, planned to spend the night with the guest's of the Ramond's to give you guys an enjoyable stay on this lonesome island of ours." There was a round of aplause, from the men and one shouting, "oh good on you man now we aren't embarrased by the speech you did, it's better than what Howard just said' "oh thank you guys, said Moira, "my sister, and our friend here, nodding in the direction of Saloz, are so grateful for your plans of entertaining us tonight in card games, but Im sure we can learn for we have never played the game." "Oh my beautiful girls' added in Mr.Ramond please just ignore these men and go to bed they are'nt worth your time."hearing that everybody just bent on laughing their heart's out, and Mrs. Ramond while laughing adressed the girl's to ignore her husband comment, another man named Paks, said maybe Ramond had eaten too much and that decreased his love for us, everyone broke into laughter, Oh no wonder there were so much laughter earlier on, the jokes, and the game and their comments, though you were'nt in a state of laughing, you couldn't control it.
So the girls joined in the card games, laughing at how they played not being familiar with the game, just playing according to what they could make out.
All the time, the games and discussion between the two parties went on, one of them, just sat watching everyone, smilling when everyone was doubling up with laughter, and Maera, sitting in the chair opposite him beside the wall eyeing him secretly, as if trying to read what was going on in his mind, she saw that he has the built of tough wide shoulders, and has an air of a strong personality, did not join in the jokes but stood up when his turn to play comes, there was something in him that attracted Maera but Maera could not put her fingers on what it is.
it was getting so late, and as Maera checked her watch, it was already 10 pass 12 after midnight, and Mrs. Ramond had long gone to bed. "Maera! we have to go to bed if we want to go out sight seeing tomorrow,;" "okay then, but shouldn't we excuse ourselve's ? after all these guy's came to make us happy" "off course I intended to do that sis, no problems with that."
"Okay then I'll go ahead before you to bed then," then turning to their bedroom door looked back and saw the man staring and he started when Maera said, "good night?" " Spencer" the man said, smiling, "yeah good night, Maera 'I hope to see you tomorrow?" Maera just nodded hoping no one could read the burning in her cheeks when gazing at this guy called Spencer he was so attractive; oh no what am I thinking of? she quickly turned to open their bedroom door.
Maera was just drifting to sleep after trying so hard to relax and sleep; but then Moira came in and closing the door after her she saw Maera still awake and asked, "why are'nt you sleeping yet?"
" Oh I was about to' but your coming in the room just disturbed it." " Ooh! maybe I should have tiptoed," " yeah maybe" thought Maera, knowing that there was a real reason for finding hard time to sleep. She kept seeing Spencer in her mind and begged herself to "stop it"then she fell into a deep sleep.
Her sleep was disturbed by a sound coming from the window, and as she thought maybe it was only a dream, Then she heard it again a faint scratching on the window screen. She thought of waking her sister, but thought again and got up herself, and went over to the window, and saw Tamon, one of the men who played with them, he whispered, "can I talk with you before I leave for our factory site?"oh but can"t it wait for tomorrow?"" No tomorrow I wont have a change cos I work full day tomorrow;"Okay say's Maera,"
So she put on her shawl, and silently went out. Outside three of the men slept snoring, two on the floor and one on the sofa, Spencer, was no where to be seen.
Maera opened the front door and saw Tamon sitting on the stool outside the front yard, seeing Maera, he beckoned to a stool beside him, and as Maera sat down, he reached out for her hands, but Maera pulled her hands back and exclaimed "now Mr. Tamon, you said you wanted to talk and I have known you only tonight, its not proper to try and touch me I didnt come for that' please understand me;" " Oh okay Im really sorry for that but I want to be your friend,"" but of course, I and my sister are your friends, there's nothing wrong with that,"" its not what I mean, Maera, I am so attracted by your beauty that I can't wait to ask you, I want to be in a relationship with you." Oh I'm sorry Tamon, but its too early to accepting that kind of relationship,
