Chapter 4

642 Words
Aaron started complaining before Evelyn could say a word. "Why aren't you at the company yet? I left a document at home. Bring it over quickly. It's needed for the meeting." Evelyn's voice was particularly weak. She wanted to refuse. But as Aaron's secretary, this was her job. "Okay, I'll bring it over in a bit." In the taxi, the driver noticed her pale face. "Miss, do you want me to take you to the hospital first?" She shook her head. Before leaving, she was just Aaron's personal secretary, so she should do her job well. Evelyn handed the document to him at the door of his office. As she pushed the door open, she heard him on the phone. "Sleep a bit more, Fiona, I'll come see you after I'm done." She felt a pang in her heart. "Mr. Moore, the document." Hearing her call him Mr. Moore, Aaron knew she was upset again. He frowned and explained, "The rain last night was too heavy, I didn't come back after finishing work, you..." He actually lied. Evelyn turned her head away, not exposing him. Running too fast made her break out in a sweat, and a wave of coldness hit her, making her feel dizzy. She curled up and squatted on the ground. Aaron panicked, picked her up, felt her burning body, and shouted, "Now! Get us to the hospital!" Through the haze of fever, she was vaguely aware of chaos erupting in the office around them. Aaron's voice was clearly laced with worry and distress. "Cancel the damn meeting. It's canceled." But Evelyn also heard people whispering. "Evelyn is superb at manipulating men, even using the self-harm trick." "If you ask me, this trick won't work. Who can replace Mr. Moore's love for Fiona?" In the car, Evelyn tried to struggle out of Aaron's arms. He didn't let go. "Don't move around. Why didn't you tell me you were sick?" She was carried out of the car by Aaron, directly to the emergency room, and placed on a chair. "Stay put, I'll go register you." Unexpectedly, after a few steps, he saw Fiona. "Fiona, what are you doing here?" Evelyn finally got a look at the legendary woman. And indeed, there was a resemblance between them. "I planned to make some soup when I woke up, but I burned my hand and went to the hospital for treatment." Seeing her hand, red from the burn, Aaron felt a pang of concern. He immediately busied himself with registration, examination, and getting medicine until Fiona's hand was bandaged, then she asked him. "Aaron, why are you here at the hospital?" Only then did he remember that Evelyn was still waiting for him on the chair. "The company secretary fainted at work, so I brought her in. I'll take you home first." Evelyn didn't wait for Aaron to return. She was registering just less than three meters behind them. He didn't notice her at all. Aaron sent Evelyn a message. Aaron: Sweetheart, I ran into someone I know. I'll come back to pick you up later. Aaron supported Fiona as they walked towards the parking lot, passing right by Evelyn. "Aaron, I want to host a party at home this weekend to catch up with some old classmates." "Sure, I'll arrange it." Evelyn didn't confront them directly. After all, she was leaving anyway. Might as well part on decent terms. During the IV drip, exhaustion finally overtook her and she fell asleep. She was shaken awake by a nurse. The line had backed up with her blood, staining the tube a deep, alarming red. The nurse looked around. "Where's your boyfriend? He never came back?" Evelyn stared blankly for a full minute. Just when the nurse thought she wouldn't answer, Evelyn suddenly smiled. "Yeah." she said, her voice flat. "He's not coming back."
