*LILA’s POV*
‘Brown burly locks.’
‘Sparkling emerald green eyes.’
‘He was the epitome of beauty.’
I thought to myself as I sighed wistfully thinking of Damian Hendrix.
My alpha mate.
My wolf yipped at the remembrance of what happened the night before.
I had bumped into the other alpha for the first time yesterday night and then our wolves recognized each other to be mates.
I had always dreamt of meeting my future mate so I would be able to run away with him far, far away from my reality.
“Anything better than this.” I muttered looking around the small room that I had occupied since when I was little.
At least I had shelter, left to only my step mother, that woman would have thrown me out of the streets.
“I’ll just run away with him.” I concluded delusional in my head.
I didn’t have any choice.
The moon goddess loved me so much to even make Damian Hendrix my mate. He was the only son of our pack leader and the next one after his dad.
A soft knock sounded on the door distracting me.
“Yes?.” I mumbled grudgingly getting up from the mat on the floor.
“You are needed, Miss Lila.” A maid’s voice rang out.
I didn’t get the chance to answer when an annoying voice followed immediately.
“Get up, lazy swine.”
A frown settled on my facial features as I walked towards the door but then I stopped.
The sight of something surprising caught my attention, I could see some guards through the windows in my room.
Only important people are always with …
My thoughts trailed away as I went closer to spy on what was going on.
Was that the pack leader?
And his son, Damian?
“Lila, get out of your room, father calls for us.” My step - sister’s voice rang out harshly.
“I’m on my way, you insolent brat.” I muttered inwardly.
Then I paused realizing what my step sister just said.
Our father is calling me.
The pack alpha is here at our home.
With Damian in tow.
And that only means …
I squealed out of excitement as i put two and two together realizing what was going on.
Damian was actually coming to ask for my father’s permission to court me.
He was actually going to mate with me after all.
I had doubts with the way he reacted when they both realized they were mates. Damian looked like he didn’t want to be anywhere near me.
But now…
My face contorted into a grin as I happily left the window side and headed towards the front door.
My day, for the first time since I was born, had a little bit of hope.
I closed my door hurriedly and turned to leave to the living room when I bumped into the thorn of my life.
Nadia pushed me back immediately sporting a disgusted look on her face. “Do not touch me.”
“Sorry.” I apologized reluctantly.
It was something I didn’t like to do but I had neither the strength nor the effort to fight with Nadia today.
I bypassed my sister and tried to leave when I got dragged back.
“And where are you going? The kitchen is that way.” Nadia pointed at the direction resentfully. “Or have you forgotten easily where you belong?.”
I scoffed.
If Damian did come here to make me his mate then the first thing I was going to do as the next pack’s luna, was to make Nadia’s life miserable.
I forced a smile responding. “Father is calling me. You said that yourself.”
“He’s calling you to help the maids in the kitchen.” Nadia responded like it was an obvious fact as she waved her hand. “So go.”
“W-What?.” My resolve was beginning to crack. “Are you lying to—.”
“Oh my goodness.” Nadia groaned. “Do not spoil my mood on the day my alpha comes to ask for my hand in marriage.”
And I stumbled.
“What?.”
“Damian Hendrix is my alpha, he and his father came for me, I’m going to be this pack’s next Luna.” Nadia said pridefully.
“But that’s not possible, I’m—.”
“Your presence is being requested, Miss.” A maid comes over to say interrupting the two of us.
“If you’ll excuse me.” Nadia says cruelly pushing me aside. “My attention is needed.”
She says and walks over.
No. No. No. No.
‘Nadia cannot have everything’
‘It’s not possible. It’s unfair’
“He’s my mate.” I whispered to myself in thin air. “Not yours.”
With wavering determination, I went after Nadia and ended up at the main courtyard where my father and step mother were having conversation with the pack leader and Damian.
My step mother frowned the moment she caught sight of my presence while my father looked away.
He never for once noticed me.
Nadia must have noticed the atmosphere change because she turned back to see me there and a scowl appeared on her face.
“Why did you follow me?.” She asked through gritted teeth.
I ignored her and bowed to the pack leader instead acknowledging his presence. “Welcome to our home, Alpha Mattel.”
The pack alpha nodded his head in response and Nadia begrudgingly stopped berating me and greeted him too.
I straightened back up and made eye contact with Damian.
He was looking more handsome than the night before.
I manage to catch my mate's eye, beaming with affection, but my smile fades as I see the moment he glance past me to Nadia instead.
The warmth drains from my expression, replaced by a pang of betrayal and hurt.
I watch as his eyes light up, fixed on my sister, a spark of love evident in his gaze. It's a look I have never seen directed at me, and I know he's fallen for my sister because he never looked at me.
My heart begin to ache as I feel a sharp pang of sadness, while my throat felt like it was burning with the bitter sting of unshed tears.
Did he come here for Nadia?
My unanswered question rang in my head as Damian never glanced at my side for once.
“And who’s she?.”
The pack leader’s question brought me back to the present.
And Damian finally noticed that I was there. But his facial expression was blank.
That wasn’t the look of someone who promised to mate me yesterday.
He looked like he didn’t even remember me.
“She’s just nobody.” My step mother replied instantly standing up.
She came over grabbing me by the hand giving me a small shove to the exit area.
“She’s only here to serve us and she’s just leaving.”
I didn’t have any strength left in me to fight back as I went along with the lies that was told.
Leaving, I heard distinctly my step mother introducing Nadia to Damian.
I held my heart as I stumbled over to a nearest wall.
I just needed some time to calm down and think over everything.
Maybe Damian had a twin brother.
Maybe it’s the twin that’s planning to court Nadia.
But deep down, I knew that wasn’t it. I knew it was Damian Hendrix in the flesh in that room.
Nobody else.
The same Damian Hendrix who had reassured me that he wasn’t going to reject me.
But now?
What would happen if he decided to get married to Nadia instead?
Nothing would happen to him.
But then me… no one wants an unmated and rejected omega.
I already had enough being rejected from birth by my mother, then being disliked by my father, being maltreated by my step mother and step sister.
But now my own mate is choosing another person over me?
“Arghhh.” I crouched over in pain as her head was throbbing.
My omega wolf was already feeling pain from its mate withdrawing from her.
I could feel it.
Damian was going to reject me.
But she wasn’t going to let that happen.
Nadia had everything she wanted and I won’t let her take this one thing.
I managed to gather strength and stood up back. I sighted the maids of the house moving to the courtyard with visiting gifts for the pack leader.
I immediately approached one of them and managed to convince her to hand over a ceramic made decorated pot.
I took it and marched along with the other maids to the courtyard.
I had just entered the minute I heard the words come out from the pack leader’s mouth.
“Okay it’s decided. Our families will be united by my son and your daughter under the next full moon.”
My step mother was grinning.
My father was reaching over to shake his hands with the pack alpha in agreement.
The flower pot unexpectedly tumbled from my grasp, its fall punctuated by a sudden, dramatic shatter that reverberated through the courtyard.
The sound of it breaking echoed like a startled gasp, drawing every eye to the scene.
“What?.” My hands involuntarily trembled as I muttered weakly.
