The sound of Aria's palm connecting with Freya's cheek resounded in the living room. Aria thundered. “Don't you know how to do anything right, you wench?!” Freya hung her head, her lips trembling as she spoke. “I'm sorry.” Aria's hand fisted her hair and yanked her face upwards. “If you're sorry then go brew another tea!” “Yes, ma'am.” Freya muttered. Aria let go of her and she fell to the polished floor. “Are you okay? Or did your weight finally pull you under?” One of Aria's friends laughed as she pointed at Freya. Another laughed. “She could literally fit through two doors. Look at how fat she is.” “Stand up!” Aria yelled at Freya. “Even with all that weight, a single slap can put you to sleep! Go get us more tea!” Freya felt her face burn with embarrassment as Aria and her friends teased her. She bowed her head and went to carry the tray from the centre table when suddenly, approaching footsteps echoed in the hallway. “Father's here.” Aria panicked. “Relax, Aria,” one of Aria's friends clapped her friend's shoulder and whispered behind her ears. When she pulled away, Aria smirked. “You're an evil genius, Gwen.” Gwen gave a light shrug. “I aim to please.” “What's your plan, Aria?” One of her friends asked. “Just watch.” Aria went to where Freya stood and clutched one mug. Freya was startled. “What are you - -” Before she could complete her sentence, the glass mug exploded on the wall, scattering across the floor into shards. The door slammed open and a tall, huge figure walked in. His blue eyes scanning the scattered glass on the floor and the terrified looks registered on the faces of the teenagers in the room. “What happened here?” He demanded in a low tone. Aria faked a sob. “Father, it's Freya. We told her to make tea for us but she refused. She hurled the mug at us and told us not to boss her around, right, girls?” “Yes.” Ariai's friends chorused. Aria's father turned to Freya. “Is this true, Freya?” Freya closed her eyes shut. She knew if she didn't take the blame, Aria and her friends would hurt her again. She hung her head and whispered. “It was me. I did it.” “Alpha Jericho you're needed in the hall.” said his Beta, Jasper. Alpha Jericho rose to his feet, his eyes darkened now. “Clean up this mess at once!” Freya flinched. “Y - yes, sir. I'm so sorry, sir.” Alpha Jericho dragged his hand through his hair. “Let's go, Jasper.” He turned away from the room without sparing her a second glance and that made Freya's heart clenched. Aria's wild laughter echoed in the room. “Oh my. That was too easy.” Gwen’s mocking laugh followed. “I told you, didn't I?” “Let's get out of here.” Another suggested. “I know, right?” Aria agreed with her. “I can't even look at her.” Together, the four of them walked away, slamming the door heavily behind them. Hot tears stung Freya’s eyes as she picked up the shards. She let them trickle down her cheeks when a shard nicked her finger. She sank to her knees and sobbed. That evening, Freya listened in on Aria with her friends as they talked about the mating ceremony and she couldn't help but smile. They were talking about Alpha Tristan, her mate. Freya knew he was her mate from when they were children. Tristan had saved her from bullies and had promised to marry her when they grew up. She had fallen in love with him right away. As Aria gushed over him, she nearly broke down the door. Instead, she cleared her throat and knocked quietly on the door. “Ma'am, the carriage is ready.” “Yes, right on time.” Aria swung the door open, not bothering to apologize to Freya whom it hit in the face. “Come on, girls!” Aria echoed and her friends followed behind her. Freya clenched her fists at her side. “Just you wait, Aria. I'm going to win.” She rushed to her room in the attic and pried open a floorboard. She dug her hand in and whipped out a white cloth. She replaced the floorboard and put the white cloth on her bed. With a steady exhale, she unwrapped the white cloth to reveal a blue dress. Her eyes sparkled with glee and she smiled. “Tonight will be my night. Tristan… wait for me.” The pack hall bustled with activities. Werewolves dressed in pristine suits and beautifully tailored gowns, mingled with each other and flirted over wine. Light music filled the air, courtesy of the band of musicians and the scent of food filled the air. Suddenly, the room seemed to stop when a young lady walked in. Heads turned, jaws dropped and all eyes were on her as she walked by. Aria gasped in shock when she realised the lady was Aria. “Where do you get that dress?” Freya ignored her, walking towards Alpha Tristan who was occupied with his friends. “Hello, Tristan.” Freya greeted with a boldness she never knew she had. A smile graced Alpha Tristan’s lips as he scrutinized the woman standing before him. “Hello, there.” “It's me, Freya Crescent.” Freya introduced herself. The moment those words left her lips, Tristan's face fell and he wrinkled his nose in disgust. “You? Freya?” He scoffed. “For a second, I thought you were someone else. Didn't know you were Freya, the lowly servant.” Freya froze. “What?” Tristan leaned forward. “Are you not a maid, Freya?” “Yes, but …” “Do you think a person of my calibre should be seen with a person like you?” He raised an eyebrow. Freya was stunned. “B - - but you're my mate…you said…” “I reject you, Freya Crescent. A weak Omega like you can never be my mate.” Tristan declared aloud this time, attracting whispers now. Freya watched in shock as Tristan walked past her to meet Aria. Her breath got in her throat as Tristan went to one knee before her. “Aria Crescent,” he took her hands. “Will you do me the honour of becoming my mate and the Luna of the RedMoon pack?” Aria squealed happily. “Yes!” The crowd went wild with applause as Tristan picked Aria up in his arms and gave her a passionate kiss. Tears filled Freya’s eyes, blurring her sight. Her chest tightened and she could barely breathe now. She hyperventilated softly, leaning against the wall for support. ‘So this is what rejection feels like’, She thought. Gwen chuckled. “Why are you crying, Freya? You're not exactly the catch of the century.” Another friend of Aria's chimed in. “Gwen is right. Who would spend the rest of their life with a weak Omega like you?” Aria had pulled away from Tristan and was pointing at her. “I'm not surprised that Alpha Tristan rejected you, Freya. I mean, the only special thing about you is that you're fat.” The room boomed with laughter. With fisted hands, Freya watched the room with filled eyes. Everyone was laughing at her including those whom she had thought were her friends. The pain stung and she wanted to get rid of it. Taking a shuddering breath, she said aloud. “Alpha Tristan…” As she let go of the wall, her vision blurred but she ignored it. Staring at him dead in the eyes, she announced. “Alpha Tristan, I… reject…you… as my fated mate.” “Oh nice. I even wanted that.” “Go to hell.” Her words came out in a whisper and soon, her body swayed, giving to the darkness that called her.
