Daria’s POV The sight of Alpha Fenrir at my father's home startled me. He could have invited my parents to his apartment if he had wanted to. "Yes, I'm Daria," I answered in a terrified tone. "Go inside right now!" Natalie jolted me out of my trance with a nasty statement. "And don't leave until you're told to!" I was certain that Alpha had come to discuss arrangements with us in order to keep my identity as Zack's partner a secret. I bent my head and followed Maya into my bedroom, speculating about the amount my parents would demand. Although I was unsure of my exact financial value, I was confident that it had significantly increased since becoming Zack's partner. Howdy, Daria! Saying this, Maya put her arms around my shoulders as soon as we entered my small bedroom. "What will happen now?" With my head resting on Maya's shoulder, I asked, "What if I escape?" Startled, Maya withdrew. "Are you nuts?" she chastised me. "You will be branded as a rogue if you flee. Do you know what happens when they apprehend rogues? Biting my lip, I trudged to my bed, fatigued on the inside as well as out. "I understand," I murmured in a raspy tone. "The packs always find them, and if they are found, they are put down." "If you are aware, what makes you even consider running away?" Maya reprimanded me. "Sofia, it's best for them to determine your fate." "I am aware of what they do to the outlaws!" I sobbed. "In a day or two, they're going to kill me and make it look like an accident!" I fell into bed on my back. "I shall at least have one opportunity to survive if I manage to flee. I'm going to locate my mother in the human world. Maya approached to take a seat on the bed's edge. "Simply if leaving the pack was that simple, Daria." Chloe came into my room when the door opened. Chloe, who was two years younger than me, did everything she could to make my stay in the house unpleasant. Half of my troubles were hers. In addition to cleaning her room and ironing her clothes, I had to prepare dinner for the two of us and occasionally give Chloe a leg massage when she was really fatigued. Chloe would complain to my mother about my work if she wasn't satisfied, at which point she would begin to beat me. Chloe was never content, so it was just the usual scene in our home. She openly made fun of me at school as well. Leaning against the door, Chloe folded her arms over her chest. She gave me a sneer. "The Moon Goddess astounds me. This time, she didn't perform her job well. How could Alpha's kid be wedded to a scraggly, feeble wolf like you? With disgust, she waved her hand at me. Alpha Fenrir has requested that you remain indoors, so don't even consider leaving the house. It has been decided by Alpha Fenrir that you will be made available to those in the Veil tomorrow. They are making their way to you. How come? With frightened eyes, Maya spoke. "How are you aware of the veil?" "I said that Alpha informed us about it, didn't I?" Chloe lost it. Nobody was aware of the veil. Only a select handful were aware of this well-held secret, and even then, they never discussed it. Chloe, there has to be a mistake! How are they going to offer me the veil? It's like I'm being sentenced to death! Honestly, it's better for them to murder me here than to give me over to those vicious animals. Chloe chuckled, thrilled. She sneered, "There isn't an error." Maya, you had better leave our home as soon as possible. The fact that you are here with her bothers Mom and Dad. She pivoted to exit via the door. With a flip of her hair, she spoke. "You deserve it, traitor!" she exclaimed before swaying and shutting the door. I felt scared and perplexed. "What's the meaning?" Maya and I asked. Before now, I was unaware of the offerings. I'd never heard of it from anyone. Maya took hold of my shoulders. Her anxious appearance had a noticeable effect on me. "By the Moon Goddess!" she said. Daria, you ought to go away!” Still, why? With my eyes bouncing between Maya's grey eyes, I asked. Maya trembled on her lips. Then she took a crimson hair lock off my forehead and stated, "The veil is home to lycans." They believe that regular female wolves give birth to robust and powerful babies unlike their females; therefore, they emerge from the veil every two years to take away the she-wolf, who are then used as their breeders. As though my suffering hadn't ended, I felt yet another wave of shock. Maya's face was dripping blood as I glanced at her. Maya went on, "Every two years, a girl from the werewolf's pack is offered as an offering to the Alphas of the Veil. That is an offering that each pack must make. It's Crescent Pack's turn this time. But based on what I've been told, a Lycan will emerge from the Veil this time, following a ten-year hiatus. Fifty years have passed since the Crescent Pack was last used to make an offering. "How are you so knowledgeable about it?" So I did. Let Maya sigh. More than sixty years ago, a Lycan made an offer to one of my aunts. After that nobody saw her again. It's a closely-kept family secret. Maya grasped my hand while I felt pity for her best friend. "Lycans are even more powerful than werewolves," the speaker went on. A Lycan can seize control and dispatch a dozen werewolves with ease. They call the area where they reside, Veil, deep in the forest. Nobody would venture there. The most suitable she-wolves to mate with were taken from the werewolf packs by the Lycans during their raids a millennium ago. It was stated that after mating with them and producing pups, they sent the girls into dungeons where they would have to live out the remainder of their days. When it came to defending their she-wolves, the Lycans were unmatched by the werewolves. A deal was negotiated between werewolves and Lycans whereby the werewolves would offer a Lycan female every two years in an effort to put an end to the senseless kidnappings. Additionally, the process's good streamlining led to an increase in the Lycans' healthy population. They had ceased to visit, yet Maya turned to face Daria. "They're returning." for oneself. I shoved my fingers up to my lips to stop myself from screaming. A shiver of fear crept into my body. Something caught in my throat. This was Alpha Fenrir's plan for eliminating me. Take me from his son's life and give me to the Lycan. He would accomplish two goals at once. "I must get away," I whispered in a hushed tone. Fear surged throughout me, vibrant and engulfing. I ran a hand through my red hair, which was snarled. "Maya, you have to help me." Maya embraced me with her arms. She was certain that not only would I be punished if she assisted me in getting away, but also she would if we were discovered. Her parents' names will also always be tarnished. One of the esteemed warriors in the Crescent Moon pack, the Alpha, had her father's utmost loyalty. She simply didn't know how to assist me without drawing the Alpha's attention. Her breath left her lips trembling. "I promise, Daria," she murmured. "I won't promise, though." I took myself away from Maya. "I comprehend." Maya remarked, "I have some cash hidden in my piggy bank." I'll smash it and give you all of my money." Take that, then flee. Suddenly, someone said, "What are you two talking about?" through the doorway.
