Chapter 1
Jane’s POV I've always looked forward to this week when I get my mate and move to my mate-bound pack. My birthday is in four days, and if anticipation could kill, I would be dead by now. I stood by my window, soaking in the view. We have always been just two children born legitimately to father - Jake and me. Jake is the newest Alpha of the Deepcrow pack. Though it has been obviously tedious, he always makes time to check up on me. I sighed, pushing the strands of escaped hair to the back of my ear. ‘What will he look like?’ I thought to myself. ‘Will he be kind and calm like Jake? Or stern like father?’ Though Father has always been soft towards me, I know it's only because it's me. He rules with an iron fist and his stern words are final. Like Jake always says, I've never seen father's wrath because I'm his golden daughter, who lives my life to please him. The door to my room creaked open, and I turned to see Gwen my waiting maid walk in. She lowered her head in greeting. I adjusted my shawl as I took steady steps closer to her. “Gwen, I need a favour.” Standing before her I took hold of her hands. Her eyes met mine. “Anything Lady Jane?” I paused watching her. I knew by anything, she meant anything the Alpha wouldn't frown against. But it has been my dream to do this. I squeezed her hand, pouting pleadingly. “Are you sure you will help me with anything?” “As long as Alpha Jake would be okay with it.” I sighed. “Please, he wouldn't be okay with it. Besides, he doesn't have to know.” She stared into my eyes, and I did the same. I squeezed her hand nudging her to reply. “Please, Gwen. For the sake of our childhood memories. Please I will leave soon, I might not have another chance to do it. Please, agree to help me.” She hesitated but I was adamant. I knew, though, that this was my fancy cage. After my wedding, I would only find myself in another fancy cage. She swallowed as she shifted. I looked at her pleadingly, not letting go of her hand. “Please, Gwen.” “Okay, My Lady.” Trying hard to contain my joy. “Are you sure?” I asked slowly, resisting the urge to wrap her in a tight embrace. She nodded slowly, the fear in her eyes dimly evident. Beaming brightly I threw her into a tight embrace. “I promise you won't regret it. I would get you whatever you want, name it.” She exhaled shakily, distress evident in her tone. “I only hope your father, or brother wouldn't find out, or if they do it would be the end for me.” I untwined our hands and went on to open my wardrobe. “They wouldn’t find out. All we need is good camouflage. I can dress as a commoner.” “How will we leave?” “Mr. Friday would smuggle us out with his vegetable truck.” “Coming in?” “We will come back through the garden.” I replied with so much assurance. “You have everything figured out my lady. How come I'm part of this plan?” “I need a tour guide.” I placed my arm on her shoulder, snuggling her closer. “And who else would do a great job than my very pretty personal assistant?” “My Lady, you flatter me.” “Nope, not flattery, I only speak the truth. Have you noticed how Alex stares at you?” She shook her head, as her brow creased. “He only stares cause he finds it hard to believe someone wouldn't fall for his charm.” Though I knew she would never agree to it, it was only proper that I reminded her that she had a special place in his heart. I know a large part of me wants to be selfish and keep her close to me forever, but I know that at some point, she would have to start building her own family. Call me selfish but if she gets married to Alex, I could ask that they move with me to my spouse's pack. But she acts as if Alex is garlic and she is a snake. “And whose charm are you falling for?” She smiled looking away shyly. “No one.” I moved my face closer to hers, recognizing the smile on her face. It's the same smile she had when she was secretly dating the farmer man. “Gwen, what are you hiding?” “It's nothing my lady, let's get you dressed.” “You are digressing.” She chuckled walking towards my wardrobe. “No, I'm not.” I followed her. “Tell me.” “There is no one my lady.” “Gwen.” “My lady I'm serious, I will tell you once I find someone.” I paused as I got to her front. I didn’t believe her, so I would have to find out myself. “Okay.” Finding it hard to believe I've given up, she asked. “Just okay?” “Yes Gwen, I am respecting your decision.” Still looking like I had grown a second horn, she nodded slowly. To save her the stress I informed her before she could start with the search. “I'm picking my outfit from your wardrobe not mine.” Her eyes went wide. “No! You can't do that My Lady.” I took a step back startled by her sudden reaction. “Don't you raise your voice at me.” My royal aura slipped, making her go into reverence. “Forgive me my lady.” I exhaled, clearing my throat before reiterating myself and making it really clear. “I am wearing your clothes.” She peeked up meeting my eyes, before nodding slowly. I smiled. “Now, let's go get dressed.” Though she hesitated, she followed me quietly as I went to her room, dodging the guards with great effort, and was successful. We both changed into something simpler. Gwen still made me wear her best outfit. Though I wanted something simpler, she was adamant. Not wanting her to change her mind, I went with the flow. I looked so different in the mirror. My milky skin stood in stark contrast to the plain purple gown. ‘Wow.’ “You can wear something from your wardrobe My Lady, I promise you, this isn’t necessary.” “I’m okay with this Gwen, thanks.” The dress was so light, it felt like I dropped my title with my dress.
