UNEXPECTED CARE

221 Words
“You should be resting.” I froze at the sound of his voice. Kael. I didn’t turn immediately. I didn’t want him to see the effect he still had on me. “I’m fine,” I said shortly. “You don’t look fine.” Before I could react, he stepped closer, his presence instantly filling the space around me. “I said I’m fine,” I repeated, turning to face him. His eyes scanned my face carefully, as if searching for something. “You haven’t been eating properly,” he said. I frowned. “And how would you know that?” “I notice things,” he replied simply. That caught me off guard. Why would he notice? Why would he care? “You don’t have to pretend,” I said quietly. “We both know this isn’t about me.” His gaze dropped briefly to my stomach. “It’s about my child,” he said. There it was. The truth. Something inside me tightened, but I forced myself to stay calm. “I’ll take care of myself,” I said. “You don’t need to worry.” His jaw clenched slightly. “I decide what I need to worry about,” he replied. For a moment, neither of us spoke. But the tension between us… Was impossible to ignore.
