Chapter one
Chapter one Maya pov Tick. Tok. Tick. Tok. Tick. Tok. "Earth to Maya, are you there?" the voice from the other side of the phone broke me out of my trance. "Maya?" my father repeated again. "I'm sorry that you get to find out today, but I didn't want you to be overwhelmed by the news." Overwhelmed he say. I am overwhelmed alright. The door to my office opened and my best friend, Stacy popped her head in. I could only watch her while I tried to keep the tears at bay, the salty liquid threatening to fall. Stacy could see my struggle and rushed over to me. "Thanks dad. I'll head in as soon as possible." I hiccuped into the phone, the heaviness in my heart was weighing me down and I needed a release. Putting the phone away, I stared at my white coated nails, my slender fingers complemented by silver rings held unto each other. "Maya. What's wrong?" Stacy sat from opposite me, her lips trapped in between her teeth. A sign that she was worried or equally anxious. "Mu-mu- she-s i- i-" I huffed out. I couldn't just do it. Letting it all out. "Mum, she's dead." and right there I broke down, in the leather seat of the small office and on the paper work in front of me. Everything happened in a blur as I tried to recall the early ten minutes, my phone ringing and the news from my father about my mothers demise. It's been twelve years since I've seen her in person, twelve years since I was sent away from the pack as an outcast, for being the weird one, twelve years since I stepped foot inside the island. Now I was going to go back there, to face the people who rejected me, pushing the thought aside I blinked. This was all for mum. All for her. Just for her. "Sorry to bring this up now but Mr. Peterson is being a jerk again and wants to chew your head out. I'll go deal with him and you can stay here." Stacy muttered lowly while she rubbed my arms. Mr. Peterson, my asshole of a boss that kept making a fuss over things that shouldn't matter and today it seems like I am his prey. Cleaning the tears with the white tissue from Stacy, I cleared my throat and closed my eyes. Opening them, I sent her a small smile. "Don't worry, I'll handle him." My voice comes out more shaky than intended. Pushing the chair backward, I rose to my feet rubbing my sweaty palm against my black skirt. "Are you sure you want to do this? You know how much of a handful Mr. Peterson can get." Smiling at the brunette next to me, I gave her a weak thumbs up. "I'm going to do this." "Then I'm coming with you." she offered. "You know, for moral support." she added and a light chuckle escaped my lips. The hallway to the publishing house was airy, and smelled like the home of a single bitter widow who has nothing to do but look at her cats and scream at children walking by the pavement. The bland painting was enough to drain you mentally and the workers reciprocated the vibes. "Maya Kristoff!" the thrilling sound of an obese man echoed through the walls of the building. "No need to shout your pant Mr. Peterson I am right here." the annoyance in my voice caused a couple of heads to look up. Maya Kristoff wasn't the one who always spoke up even when wronged but right now I was not having any of it. The oaf needed to be put in his place. "Did I hear you clearly?" Mr. Peterson, in his late fifties had a small nose which held his square glasses, his lips were also tinny but his mouth house plenty vile words. The orange shirt he wore was tight against his belly and his tie hugged around his neck. The black black he wore fitted his legs and his shoes shots under the light from the hall. "Yes, you did. Unless you have hearing problems which I doubt you do." I answered bluntly. I could feel stacy's eyes on the back of my head, as if communicating with telepathy I knew she was telling me to calm down. Mr. Peterson seemed rather surprised by my firmness, adjusting his glasses he glared at me and waved me over. "There was a mistake in the story published on the papers today, I was sure that I told you to not put out the story of the hotel on fire." He sparked folding his arms across his chest. "You asked me to do the story, it was not my idea it was yours." I replied stopping few feet away from him. My heels gave me the height advantage of a feet and I liked it. "You- you- I didn't." he denied avoiding my gaze. "Really? You don't remember what you said less than twenty four hours ago? Well let me help you-" I plucked out my phone from the band of my skirt and pressed a couple of buttons on the screen. "ALEXA, play the voice recording of Mr. Peterson from yesterday at two fifteen pm." the bell notification goes off followed by the conversation I recorded for instances like this. Mr. Peterson wasn't too happy by my response with a flaring nose, he yelled. "You have no right to that you lousy imbecile, you should know what is on the line for doing this stupid act." his voice was at the top of his lungs. "What?" I challenged raising my brows at him. "Because you'll fire me?" his face turned red and my stance gets intimidating. "Maya-" Stacy whispered next to me but I ignored her holding my ground. "You know what? You don't have to go through the trouble of getting rid of me you ass hat, cause I f*****g quit."
