Chapter 3 Maya pov Maybe I should've not sparked as much as I did back at the office, but I did and now I don't have a job or money to keep me going. "Miss?" "Miss?" my eyes snapped towards the man standing in front of me, his brown eyes peered at me with worry. "Sorry." I blushed seeing how I was caught in my chain of thought again. "You said you're heading to West ville?" "Yeah, I am." I answered. "What for if I may ask?" The man asked again helping me with my bags outside the airport. "Uhm-" my face fell. "I'm going for my mother's burial." The man halted, with his lips parted wide he stared at me in shock. "You're Serena's daughter?" Serena. That was my mothers name. Still popular back here. "Yeah." I chuckled brushing away the nervousness building. "You- are-" he let go of my bag and took a step back. "Where are you g-" the man shook his head. "You're her daughter- You're that ou-" he clamped his hands over his lips to prevent the rest of his words but it was too late, it all registered in my head. Taking my bag I glanced around hoping no one was watching us and turned back to him. "Was there a rule to stay away from me?" I asked sincerely. "Uhm-" he started. "Not exa- no- " Letting out a sigh, I rubbed my forehead gently. "It's fine. I'll just get another cab to get me to where i'm going to." With a curt nod, I walked away from him as quickly as I could. Hailing a cab down, I got into the car dragging my bag with me. "Westville." The driver opened his mouth to protest. "I'll pay you handsomely for it." I offered and that shut him up. With my elbow by the window side, I started out the window watching as the trees flashed past me. How different was this place going to be? Twelve years? Does it make that much difference? The new building structures at commercial centres leave me in awe, someone has been working well enough to develop this place. "You need to find a job after the funeral." I reminded myself. With just a couple hundreds I could do a thing or two before I run out of cash completely. Stacy and my savings were the things keeping me right now. Counting the streetlight, I fall asleep in no time. The tapping against the window brings me out of the little uncomfortable nap, My fingers cross the small drool at the edge of my lips and I curse using the back of my palms to wipe it up. The tapping on the window came again and I blinked rapidly to clear the sleep away. My fathers smiling face stared down at me. Even with his jade eyes which gave us that resemblance, his own still had light and life in them. The door opened and I stepped out, flinching as the bright light from the sky pierced at my face, hot, good thing I wore sunscreen. "Maya." He called to me pulling me in a hug. He smelled like rosemary sprigs and orange peel. His beards pricked against the skin on my face but it didn't matter cause I enjoyed being with him. In all the twelve years I've been away, dad was the only one who came to visit, he brought gifts and cards, presents, called me on my birthday all the time. He would travel down to see me and take me on dinner dates just to find out how I was doing. Mother on the other hand, didn't act like I existed, no calls, no texts, even when I sent her heart warming message with hope of getting a reply, nothing. “I've missed you.” He murmured squeezing me gently. I know what he meant, those words, it wasn't the bland words you would use after not seeing someone in a while, they were words that conveyed the need for comfort. Comfort that he could find in no one else but me. "I've missed you too." I answered pushing my face further into his chest. "Come lets go get you settled down. You must be exhausted from your flight." He slowly pulled away caressing my cheeks. Helping me with my bag, he walked into the house with me behind him. It was strange, being back here. The front door was still as I recalled only that it was now black not the rusty brown it had been. The flower pots were arranged in a descending order of the size, I stopped just in front of the opened door, breathing in and out, I didn't realize how much courage it would take for me to step back in. "You okay?" my dad called out to me and I don't reply instead I nod feeling the heaviness in my mouth. "Are you sure you want to stay at the house? if you're not so comfortable you can stay in a hotel." "No- no it's totally fine." I rushed out. "No it's not, you're literally shaking." I glanced down at my hands and true to his words they were jittering. "Come on, you're lodging in a hotel." He said pulling me towards his car. I had calmed down by the time we got to the hotel, it was in the middle of town, almost like a safe space. Father said that this was a neutral spot for all creatures, werewolves and human alike so I shouldn't worry about being treated differently. "Welcome to hill house hotel, how can I help you?" "I'll like a room for my-" dads phone began to ring and he frowned staring at the screen. He ignored it talking to the reception. The phone started ringing again. "You should take it, I can handle it from here." I offered stepping besides him. "you sure?" "Yes." He nodded walking to a more secluded area to talk, as my eyes followed his movement something, or rather someone caught my attention. A man who had been staring at me, his eyes were shielded by his dark glasses but I was very certain that he was staring at me and by the time I blinked, he was gone.
