Beth POV
The first sensation I have is something soft and silky touching my body, followed by a whistling sound to one side of me. Then the delicious smell of cinnamon and nutmeg mixed in with bacon. The smell not only makes my mouth water but also sends warmth through my body. My fingers twitch and eyelids flutter as my body tries to wake from the slumber I have been under, but I am struggling to rise from the abyss.
The whistling stops as a rustling noise proceeds a deep gruff voice, “You’re awake! You have been out for days.”
The voice causes my eyes to shoot open and I am suddenly blinded by a bright light above me. Blinking repeatedly, I raised my arm to shield my eyes and turned towards the voice. I can only make out the silhouette of a man beside me until my eyes finally get used to the light and my vision clears.
Stood next to the bed is the most attractive man I have ever seen; dark brooding eyes looking at me with concern partially covered by a mop of dark brown hair. Stubble lines his jaw, a stark contrast to his plump pink lips. The sight of him has the warmth in my body being ramped up to a burning between my legs. My heart rate increases tenfold at the thought of wrapping my legs around the man standing before me, a man I didn’t know, a man I had never seen before.
“Beth, I am so glad you are awake. You’ve been unconscious since you hit your head two days ago.” The man tells me, a large smile gracing his luscious lips.
“Wh…..” I managed to croak out, my mouth now suddenly dry.
“Let me get you some water.” He turns away from me and picks up a glass with a straw from a table beside the bed. Placing the straw at my lips. “Here, this will help.”
I raised my head slightly and placed my lips around the straw, taking a large sip of water. The effort of holding my head up for just a short period of time exhausts me and I flop back down on the pillow.
“Where am I?” I asked him, “Who are you?”
“The doctor said that you may suffer some memory loss. What’s the last thing you remember?” he asks.
I search through my thoughts, trying to find memories, anything. But there is nothing there, it’s all blank. Shaking my head, tears formed in my eyes. “Nothing,” I whispered.
“Nothing? Nothing at all?” he sounds shocked, confused as I shake my head. “Do you know your name?”
Tears started to fall, and I rolled away from him, “No.”
“Oh, my dear, dear Beth.” He coos at me, resting a hand on my hip. “I will tell you everything, perhaps it will help you remember.”
I turn to lie on my back once more, but his hand stays still and now rests on my abdomen. The sensation of his warm hand through the thin sheet had my heart pounding in my chest and warmth flooding me again. Just an inch lower and……. The loss of his hand on me caused a groan to escape my lips. What is going on? Why am I feeling this way?
“Ummm…. Your name is Beth, and I am Conrad. We are from the same pack and good friends; we grew up together although I am two years older than you.” He told me and I gave him my full attention. “Our pack was attacked by a band of rogues a couple of years ago, it left our pack devastated. We lost a lot of people that day and our pack house, hospital, school and several homes were burnt to the ground.”
“We tried to rebuild but we ran out of money, we used all our pack funds, and it still wasn’t enough. We struggled to buy food, clothing, medical supplies. Pack members were starting to leave. Then a man came to us. He told my father of a way we could raise funds, but dad said he would only do it with the pack’s agreement.” He told me.
“My dad called a pack meeting. He outlined the idea. The pack was in an uproar, but then you stepped forward.” He smiled at me. “You volunteered to be sold. You had just turned eighteen and got your wolf, but you hadn’t found your mate. So, you stepped forward as everyone yelled and screamed at my father. You stepped forward and shouted out, ‘I will do it. I am young and still a virgin, you will get more for me.’ Everyone was stunned into silence.”
I was stunned. I offered to sell myself! I bolted upright in the bed, the sheet falling to my waist. I stared at Conrad in disbelief. I then noticed that he was staring at my breasts. Looking down, I finally noticed that I was naked under the sheet, and he was now staring at my bare breasts. Pulling the sheet up to cover myself, I glared at the man sitting next to me, his tongue moistening his lips as he shifted in his seat. Glancing down, I saw a bulge forming in his pants. I should be horrified, but I find myself wanting to kiss those moist lips and grind against that bulge.
“Wh….Why am I naked?” I asked, suppressing my urges.
Conrad clears his throat and crosses his legs in an attempt to hide the evidence of his arousal, “When we arrived here, the people running the place wanted you to have a medical exam. To make sure that you were healthy and confirm that you…. That you…ummm.” He waved his hand in the direction of my hips and looked away.
“That I am a virgin.” I finished for him. “Carry on,” I urged.
“They led you to this room but wouldn’t let me enter. From what you told me afterwards, they asked you to take a shower and when you came out of the bathroom they had taken your clothing. They gave you the medical exam and when you asked for your clothing back they refused, stating that although when you arrive at the sale you will be dressed in a white robe, that you are expected to remove it so that the buyers can…. can view the goods. In the meantime, you need to get used to being naked around strangers, so no clothing.” He told me.
To say that I was aghast was an understatement. But something bothered me, “What did my parents say when I volunteered?” I asked him.
He lowered his eyes to his fidgeting hands resting on his lap, “Your parents died in the rogue attack. They died protecting you.” He told me, raising his head to look me in the eyes. I could see his eyes gleaming with unshed tears.
Nodding, I swallowed the lump that had formed in my throat at the thought of the death of parents I couldn’t even remember. “So, why have I been unconscious for two days?”
Blinking away the moisture in his eyes, Conrad gave me a sad smile. “The first day we were here, they let me bring you food from the cafeteria, but then they said that you had to get your own food. The corridor we had to go down to get there had recently been mopped. Your foot must have slipped in a wet patch. I was leading the way and didn’t see you fall. I heard a crash behind me and when I turned round you were on the floor, blood pooling around your head. You had caught the corner of a display cabinet when you fell.”
Still holding the sheet tightly to my neck with one hand, I used my other hand to search the back of my head, looking for a bump or sore patch but finding nothing.
Seeing my confusion, Conrad reached out but before he touched me, he withdrew his hand. “You have been out for two days, you wolf has healed the damage to your head, but not your memory. That should come back in time.”
Lowering my arm, I clasped the sheet in both hands and timidly smiled at him, “Thank you. Why did you come with me?”
His face brightens and uncrossing his legs, he sits up taller. “Well, as your best friend, I couldn’t let you come alone. Someone has to look after you.” He tells me smiling, “Besides, who better than the Alpha’s son to make sure the money gets back home?”
I smile back at him just as my stomach rumbles. Gasping in horror, my hands dart to my stomach and the sheet falls once again, exposing my naked breasts to the man beside me. This time he immediately looks away and rises from his seat. Covering myself up once more, I felt my cheeks warm with a blush.
A plate appeared in front of me, “Here, have some food, they have let me bring some from the cafeteria in case you woke up. I will go and get some drinks. Would you like some coffee?”
Taking the plate from him, I murmured a “Yes, please.”
“I will be back soon.” He tells me and leaves the room.
Now that I am alone, I let the sheet fall to my waist and place the plate on my lap. Lifting the cob, I take a large bite, savouring the juicy bacon and fresh bread. Swallowing the food, I take a big breath in and I look down at my food in confusion. Although I still smell bacon, I can no longer smell cinnamon or nutmeg. Looking at the door that Conrad had just walked through, I felt a longing for him to return.
