Connor POV
I stayed silent whilst my dad drove back to the cabin, where my Dad’s Beta, Stuart, and our head tracker waited for us. They had scoured the building and surrounding grounds but had found nothing. It appeared that one of the kidnappers had broken into the house before our guards had arrived and had waited in my room as it was closest to the fire escape and the other had been positioned in a tree where he could view the fire escape. Both had been smothered in a scent neutraliser.
When the guards arrived at the property to secure the location prior to mine and Beth’s arrival, they had surveyed the grounds but not the inside of the building as they didn’t want their lingering scents to impact on our weekend. This had been a terrible mistake and Beth had been kidn*pped because of their oversight. When I found out, I wanted to lash out and punish them, but my dad and Stuart held me back and bundled me back into my dad’s car.
Sitting silently and with my temper rising, my dad drove us calmly back to town and home. Stuart followed us in my car; mine and Beth’s bags once again in the boot. The guards would finish off the investigations at the cabin under the guidance of the head tracker. The guard that had been dosed with wolfsbane had already been transported to the pack’s hospital.
Entering dad’s office, I threw myself down onto one of his couches, my elbows resting on my knees and my head buried in my hands.
“Stuart, I want the tech guys to review all the CCTV footage from the main road that the lane leads to. I want the licence numbers of all vehicles that could have exited that road, I want the owners traced and the vehicles located asap.” My dad barked.
“The car was black.” I murmured into my hands.
“That will narrow it down,” Stuart commented, and left the office.
Raising my head from my hands, I gazed numbly at my father sitting behind his desk. “Who could have done this, dad? Only ranked members and their families, along with the assigned guards knew about the trip.”
“I don’t know, son, but we will find out. We will get her back.” He told me.
“Get who back?” my sound of mother’s voice from the door had both of us looking in her direction.
“Connor, I thought you and Beth were staying at the cabin all weekend.” Sarah said from next to my mother, as she looked around the room. “Where is Beth?”
My dad and I looked at each other momentarily before he rose from his seat and crossed the room. Placing his arm around Sarah’s shoulders, he led her into the room. “Sarah, I think you need to sit down.” He helped her into the seat next to mine and all I could do was stare at the mother of my mate, the mother of the woman I had let down.
“What is going on Patrick?” my mother asked, following them inside and perching on the arm of the chair that my dad had led Sarah to.
Taking his seat behind the desk once more, my dad looked at Sarah, his face full of remorse. “Sarah, I’m afraid Beth has been kidnapped.” He told her.
Sarah turned and looked at me, but I couldn’t look her in the eyes. I just lowered my head and nodded dejectedly.
“How did they get through our security?” Mum asked.
“They were already there when the guards arrived and used scent neutralizers.” Dad informed her. “Our Tech Team is currently reviewing CCTV footage of the surrounding roads to try and find the vehicle they escaped in.”
“Can we use the pack link or mate bond to find her?” she queried.
“Beth was never brought into the pack for safety reasons.” Dad said, before looking at me.
I shrugged my shoulders, “I can feel her, she is alive. But beyond that…..” I said, shaking my head.
“What about the familial link?” Mum suggested.
“Sarah’s human, so the link isn’t there.” Dad replied.
“What about Leon?” Sarah spoke for the first time.
“Can we trust him?” I asked, “Someone close to us is involved.”
“We can trust him,” Sarah stated.
“I agree.” Mum said, backing her.
Dad immediately picked up his desk phone and dialled a number. After a few minutes, we heard Dad’s side of the conversation.
“Can I speak to Alpha Leon?.............It is an urgent matter…………. Are you sure he can’t be disturbed?.........Fine, please ask him to call Alpha Patrick of Moonsprings…………Thank you.”
We all stared at him as he replaced the handset, “It appears that he is in a meeting with his omegas and cannot be disturbed.”
“I have his mobile number.” Sarah said, taking her phone out of her pocket and dialling the number. After a moment, she lowered her phone, “he rejected my call.”
Her phone beeped, a text message coming through. She quickly types a reply. Less than a second later, her phone rings and she answers it.
“What do you mean Beth has been kidn*pped?” Alpha Leon shouts through the phone.
“Let me.” Dad says, holding his hand out for her phone, which she handed it over.
“Alpha Leon. Alpha Patrick here. Let me tell you what we know.” My dad spoke calmly into the phone. “ It appeared two men were lying in wait for Beth and Connor at our lakeside cabin. They used a scent neutralizer, and we believe they injected Beth and one of the guards with wolfsbane. By the time Connor noticed Beth was missing, they had escaped with her through the woods to a waiting car and driven off. We are currently trying to identify the car through CCTV, but we were hoping your familial link would assist us.”
Dad put Sarah’s phone on speakerphone and placed it on the table while we waited for Leon’s response. “I can’t reach her. It’s as if her wolf has been blocked or suppressed. I am going to grab my Beta and a couple of warriors and head out to you in the next few minutes. Perhaps by combining our resources we will find her sooner.”
The phone line went dead, and dad passed Sarah back her phone. “There isn’t much more we can do until the guard wakes up or our tech guys find something. Connor, go have a shower and get some food and rest. I will let you know as soon as we have anything.” My dad instructed.
“I won’t be able to rest until Beth is back here,” I told him, rising to my feet. “But I will get some food, not that I have an appetite.”
Leaving the office, I headed to the kitchen to grab something to eat. I rummaged through the cupboards, finding a packet of crisps. Just as I was about to open it, Sarah entered the kitchen.
“You will not survive on food like that.” She admonishes me, “Let me make you something.”
Placing a frying pan on the hob, she fetches some bacon from the fridge and starts cooking it.
“Sarah, how can you be so calm? Why are you not blaming me for Beth being taken?” I asked her, tears once again brimming my eyes.
Stopping what she was doing, Sarah sighs and turns towards me. Placing her hands on my shoulders, she looked me in the eyes, her eyes also wet with unshed tears. “Because I know that you will get her back. You, your family, your friends, Leon, will not stop until she is safely in my arms again. The only way I can help, is to stay strong and make sure that you all stay strong. This isn’t the world I grew up in, but it is my world now, because it is Beth’s world. Stay strong, Connor. Stay strong for Beth.”
I can feel my tears running down my cheeks and I try to sniff them back in. If Sarah can stay strong, so can I. Sarah pulls me into a hug and I wrap my arms around her waist, resting my head on hers. “I promise you; I will bring her back home.”
