Lizzy POV
The car journey started off in silence. The two warriors sitting in the front of the car were constantly scanning the area for threats. I sat in the back, alternating between staring out of the window at the passing scenery and playing on my phone. My mum has tried calling me twice, but I just rejected her calls. She has also texted me numerous times asking where I am and what I am doing, but I have just ignored her texts. I know that if I speak to her, she will get the truth out of me and I’m sure Dad doesn’t want anyone to know where we are going, because he mind-linked it to the warriors instead of speaking it.
My phone rings once more, ‘Mum calling’ flashing up on my screen. I reject it once more and turn my phone off, fed up with its constant buzzing. Sighing, I leant forward in my seat and held onto the seat in front of me.
“So, where are we going?” I asked the two men.
The one in the passenger seat turns slightly and looks back at me, “Moonstone.” He tells me.
The name sounds familiar, and I wrack my brains for the reason why. It then dawned on me. We went to Moonstone Springs, the home of Moonstone Pack, for the Alpha’s son’s birthday a few months ago. My mind then works through all the information I have learnt at school about the packs in the country. Moonstone Pack, Alpha is Patrick Baines, Luna is Eva Baines. They have a son, Connor, and a daughter, Crystal. It was Connor’s eighteenth birthday that we went to because Mum wanted to see if he would be my mate.
I remembered that he was handsome, but not quite my type. I also remember that dad kept looking at a dark-haired woman all through the party, which I thought was strange, especially as Mum was also there and she gets very jealous if he looks at other women.
“Do you know why we are going there?” I asked them.
“No Miss, the Alpha and Beta didn’t give us any more information.” He tells me.
“Ohh… Okay.” I said, leaning back in my seat. “Do you mind if we listen to some music on the drive?”
The radio flicks on and music starts coming from the speakers. I go back to watching the scenery fly past and soon dosed off with my head leaning against the window.
I am awoken by the sound of a phone ringing. I frantically search for my phone but the ringing stops and one of the warriors speaks, “Yes…….About an hour away………Yes, Beta.”
He puts his phone away and turns on his seat to look at me, “Not long now, Miss.”
“Thank you.” I said, before looking out the window once more. I began to recognise things from our trip here a few months ago and I am eager to see my dad and find out what is so important that he had to race to this pack.
We pulled up at the side of the road next to a ‘Welcome to Moonstone Springs’ sign. A man and two wolves exited the trees on the side of the road and approached our car. The driver turned off the radio and wound down his window.
“We are Alpha Leon’s men. I believe you are expecting us.” The driver stated.
The man nods and his eyes glaze over as he mindlinks someone. “If you follow Carl here, he will lead you to our Alpha’s house where your Beta will meet you.” He tells us as one of the wolves takes up position in front of our car and starts trotting down the road.
Winding his window back up, the driver pulls off and we follow the wolf down the road. Entering the town, we make our way to a large house that I recognised as the Alpha’s home from my last visit. Darren was standing outside waiting for us.
When the car comes to a stop, I get out and head towards my father’s Beta. As I reached him, Connor appeared at his side. As soon as he sees me, his face turns into a scowl, and he looks towards Darren.
“What is she doing here?” he asks, derisively. “We don’t know if she is involved.”
“Involved in what?” I asked, but both men ignored me.
“It was Leon’s decision. She isn’t like her mother.” Darren tells him.
Connor places his hands on his hips and turns his scowl back on me. “Doesn’t mean she can be trusted.”
“Will someone tell me what is going on and where my father is?” I demanded, my Alpha tone coming out.
“I will take you to your father,” Darren said, turning on his heel and leading the way inside the house.
“I will get your men settled.” Connor stated as I walked past him to follow Darren into the house.
He leads me up the stairs and into a bedroom, where I see Dad lying on the bed. A woman I don’t recognise is sitting next to the bed, holding my Dad’s hand and stroking his forehead.
“What happened to him? Why haven’t you called Mother?” I asked Darren.
“It’s complicated,” Darren replied with a sigh.
“Well, uncomplicate it!” I demand, raising my voice slightly as I feel my temper bubble up within me.
I see the woman gently place dad’s hand down on the bed and rise from her chair to approach us.
She smiles kindly at me, “Hi. You must be Lizzy. My name is Sarah.” She says, holding out her hand to me.
I just stared down at it before raising my eyes to meet hers. “Stay away from my father!” I told her, “Darren, call my Mother now.”
“I can’t do that, Lizzy. Your father has had her detained in the cells back home.” He tells me gently.
“What!” I screamed, “Why?”
“Why don’t you sit down,” Sarah suggested, gesturing to the chair next to the bed. “And we will explain everything.”
Huffing, I stomped over to the chair and threw myself down on it, looking up at Darren and Sarah, expectantly.
“Leon might not want her to know,” Darren says to Sarah.
“She has a right to know.” She replies, patting his arm, before approaching me.
She perches on the edge of the bed next to dad’s legs. “I was in a long-term relationship with your father until he met your mother.” She tells me. I feel my eyes widen as the shock of her statement hits me.
She places a hand gently on my dad’s leg and absentmindedly, rubs him with her thumb. “When I found out about Stacey, I left him. But he didn’t know that I was pregnant at the time.”
“I have an older sibling?” I asked her, dumbfounded.
“Yes, a sister. Her name is Beth.” She says with a smile.
“Where is she? Can I meet her?” I asked, excitedly.
My words cause tears to form in Sarah’s eyes as she looks down, but doesn’t answer me. I look at Darren, confused as to what was going on.
He walks towards me and kneels in front of me. “She was kidn*pped yesterday.” He tells me. “Your mother was behind it.”
I shook my head in disbelief, “She wouldn’t…..” I muttered. But when I look at Sarah and Darren, I know that they are telling me the truth. “What about Dad? Why is he like this?” I asked them, waving my hand towards dad’s prone body.
“We think that his ring is enchanted.” Sarah informs me, “When I tried to remove it from his hand, he screamed in pain and clutched his head before falling unconscious.”
I furrowed my brows and looked at the ring on my dad’s finger, reaching out and touching it with my finger. “But I have taken it off him before.” I muttered.
“You have?!” Sarah exclaims. I turned my head to see an incredulous look on her face.
“Yes. I was about seven or eight and I asked dad if I could try his ring on. He seemed a bit confused at the time, but said okay, so I slipped the ring off his finger and slid it onto my thumb.” I told them. “I wore it most of the day until mum saw it at dinner. She told me off and said that it was special. That it would protect dad from harm.”
“Can you take it off his finger now?” Darren asked me.
Nodding, absently, I lifted my dad’s hand and gripped the ring between my thumb and finger, gently sliding it off of his finger. Sarah and Darren watched me and my dad intensely. I presumed they were looking for any signs of harm.
I held the ring up to Darren, “What enchantment do you think is on it?”
He took the ring from me, turning it over in his hand. “An enchantment to fake a fated mate bond.” He states.
“What?!” I cried, jumping from my seat. “Mum and Dad are fated mates! Why do you think differently?”
Before they could answer, a groan came from the bed beside me. We all turned to look at dad, who was blinking his eyes and massaging his head with his hands, “What happened?” he moaned when he finally opened his eyes.
