The forest laid quietly, far away from the mountains. It was avoided by all humans and werewolves as the witches lived and resided there. That was their abode. The houses of each of the witches were just few meters apart from each other.
In the center of the forest was a young lady, the daughter of a reputable witch in the forest. Gwen was loved by all and sundry. She was the second daughter and child of her mother who always wanted the best for her people.
Little children as well as elders surrounded the six year old Gwen as she played her violin melodiously. Even at her age, she could play really well, making a lot of them appreciating her by giving her money. She played even more.
Her mother was quite ill hence she needed to raise a substantial amount of money to get the only potent drug that could heal her. As large as their community was, it was sold in just one place, the head of the witches.
Children as well as elders could not help but marvel at her at the great work she was doing. Just then, the cloud began to grumble.
Heaven was about to let loose its liquid. It was almost night time so she hurriedly packed all she had to hurry home. Her younger sister, Ocean must also have been heading home as well as Ocean had gone out too to play her violin.
The two sisters were known by all and sundry for their exceptional skills in playing the violin.
Their parents were indeed blessed to have them as those were the only source of income they had and it was paying them quite alright. Unlike them, their eldest sister, Andrea could not play the violin.
All she had to do was take care of the house while they both went out to work. She would clean the house, watch over their mother and sometimes, train the children of the other witches on their norms and cultures.
Darkness was approaching faster than she had envisioned as the rain was not helping as well. She packed up and began to run up but was suddenly stopped when she sighted blood. Fresh blood, dripping from the Tree of Justice that lied in the center of the forest.
Moving closer, she saw it. There were about six bodies, lying lifelessly as they were hung in an inverted position, fresh blood slowly dripping from their body.
About two of the bodies were werewolves and the remaining four were humans.
Of the werewolves, there was a child amongst the wolves. Their eye socket was empty as their eyes had been plucked out.
There was also a large hole in their chest. She knew their heart had been plucked out.
Marks appeared all over their body as they were placed there in the state of nature, nothing to cover them or protect them from the cold.
Well, it did not matter. They were dead after all.
It was nothing new. There was barely a day when a body or even bodies were not seen on the Tree of Justice.
Unlike every other creature, the witches had always wanted to stay on their own, no interference from any body or any other creature.
All they wanted was their space and they would not hesitate to kill anyone, digging their fingers into their prey's chest and drawing out their heart as the prey begs for mercy, plucking out their eye socket and joyfully chewing it when they wanted.
No, they did not murder them by stabbing them with knives or something. They would dig their claws deep into their prey's body, leaving marks on them as they dig deep into their flesh and their bones, breaking their bones even inside their body, digging into everywhere possible, enjoying the bitter sound of cry and mercy from their prey.
Making them beg for mercy which they won’t listen to. No, they had no mercy but this time, it was even more brutal. It seemed like whoever had killed them had done it with anger and bitterness.
Afterwards, they would hang the body on the Tree of Justice for all to see and of course, everyone who saw it would marvel but unlike others, Gwen was unmoved and indifferent.
It did not make her happy neither did it make her sad. She was just… in the middle.
She continued her journey, running when she could. Not scared of the dark or anything. She needed to get home in time.
“Just in time”
Ocean had returned a few minutes after her and was heading to their mother's room. As soon as she heard the door open, she smiled. Gwen walked in with her arms wide opened.
With a smile plastered on her face, Ocean ran into her arms. Although the age difference between them was two years, they were almost the same height.
They both were drenched from the rain but it did not matter much. All that mattered was the love they had for each other which was able to conquer any cold…. Or maybe not.
“You need to change your dress” Gwen suggested.
“So do you” Ocean replied with a smile as they walked together, hands in hands to their room.
They shared the same room. Gwen could not help but notice something was wrong. Everywhere seemed unusually quiet.
There was no sign of Andrea anywhere neither could their mother be seen. Also, their door was left opened. What was going on and where were they?
“Did you see Andrea or mom when you walked in?” Gwen questioned as she stopped in her track.
“No, I entered a few seconds before you did”
They searched everywhere quickly but there was no sight of their mother.
“Did you see the bodies at the Tree of Justice?” Gwen asked quickly.
Regardless of wherever anyone was coming from, they would definitely see the Tree of Justice as it was at the center. Ocean raised her brows. Of course, she saw it. How was it when related to whatever was on ground?
“From the marks all over their body, I could tell they were murdered in anger and this only happens when..”
“When they kill a witch!” Ocean answered quickly as her eyes widened. No! This could not be true. Could their mother have been.. No!
