Water andd Oil
I sat by the window in a small coffee shop on busy Merdeka Road, enjoying my latte and looking through my phone without a purpose. This was my first visit, even though I passed by it twice a day. From my spot, I could see the tall 118 Tower standing proudly. My attention shifted to a couple at the next table. They looked very different from each other, which caught my interest. At their table, a tall, strong man with short hair and a thick beard was focused on the woman across from him. She was small and delicate, with long, dark hair that fell over her shoulders, highlighting her gentle features. The man later introduced to me as James looked at her with eyes full of admiration and love. The woman, Lily, laughed and her eyes sparkled as she talked to him. But even with their clear connection, I felt something was off. There was a strange feeling in the air as if there was a hidden issue in their seemingly happy relationship. Curiosity got the better of me, so I leaned over and interrupted them. “Excuse me, I couldn’t help but listen,” I said, feeling a bit nervous but friendly. James turned to me with a big smile, while Lily seemed a bit more reserved. “I noticed you two seem like…” I hesitated, realizing I might be being rude. They both looked at me, waiting for me to finish, but my words escaped me. “You were saying about us being an unusual couple?” James said, clearly a bit annoyed with my pause. I felt my face grow warm and gave a weak nod, admitting my curiosity had taken over. James laughed, “We hear that a lot, right, Lily?” He nudged her affectionately. Lily smiled politely, but I saw a hint of sadness in her eyes. “We don’t mind, do we, Lily?” James said, patting her hand in a mix of love and possessiveness. I sensed that there was tension between them, a story they weren’t sharing. Wanting to know more, I asked, “How did you two meet?” A knowing look passed between them before James spoke up. “We actually worked together,” he said. “I was really impressed by how hardworking and dedicated Lily was. Something about her just caught my interest.” Lily blushed and looked down at her hands as if she wanted to hide from his praise. I noticed that she seemed uncomfortable with his attention as if she didn’t fully believe what he said. “But I was surprised when he asked me out,” Lily added softly. “I mean, he’s this big, handsome guy, and I’m just a regular girl.” James chuckled warmly, “You’re not just any girl, Lily. You’re special.” His words touched my heart. I could sense that Lily was keeping something important from him, a part of her life she hadn’t shared yet. I was determined to discover it, but I told myself that would be for another time. As weeks went by, I kept returning to the coffee shop and watching James and Lily at their table. Although they seemed happy, laughing together, the tension was still there. Lily often looked distant, and her laughter felt like a mask hiding deeper feelings. James, always eager to connect, tried to encourage her to open up, but there still seemed to be a barrier between them. One afternoon, while walking home from work, I saw Lily sitting alone on a bench outside the café, tears rolling down her cheeks. My heart broke for her; I couldn’t just walk past her. I sat beside her, wanting to offer comfort. “What’s wrong, Lily? Are you okay?” I asked gently, moving from being a stranger to someone who cared. She didn’t answer and looked down at the ground, showing me that she wasn’t ready to talk. I respected her silence and said, “It’s okay. You don’t have to share anything if you don’t want to. Just know I hope everything gets better.” I stayed by her side, just being there for her. Eventually, she spoke up, tears flowing. She shared a hard truth: she had been born a man and was changing to become the woman she felt she truly was. She was scared to tell James, worried it might ruin their relationship. My heart hurt for her. How could James not know the struggles she faced, the identity she was bravely claiming? I felt a mix of a anger and determination within me, wanting to support her more than ever. Unable to resist the allure of curiosity, I leaned over and interrupted their conversation. "Excuse me, I couldn't help but overhear," I said, my voice slightly hesitant but friendly. James turned to me, a warm smile spreading across his face, while the woman, introducing herself as Lily, appeared a bit more cautious. "I couldn't help but notice that you two seem like.....," I paused as I realised that this was inappropriate and that I had crossed the line that I shouldn't have. James and Lily looked at me with the look as if they wanted me to finish my sentence. Unfortunately, I really lost my word. " You were saying about us being an unlikely couple?" said James, maybe he was annoyed with my sudden silence. I can picture my cheeks turning red. I gave him a weak nod to confirm that my curiosity was getting the better of me. James chuckled, "We get that a lot, don’t we, Lily?" he nudged her affectionately. Lily offered a polite smile, yet there was a flicker of sadness in her eyes that didn’t escape my notice. "We don’t mind, do we, Lily?" James said, patting her hand in a gesture that seemed both loving and possessive. Though I couldn’t place why, I sensed an underlying tension, a story left untold between them. Deciding to dig deeper, I asked, "So, how did you two meet?" A knowing glance passed between James and Lily before he cleared his throat, eager to share their tale. "We actually used to work together," he explained. "I was immediately struck by how hardworking and dedicated Lily was. There was just something about her that drew me in." Lily, blushing, looked down at her hands as if trying to hide from the weight of his admiration. I noticed her discomfort with the attention James lavished upon her, an air of self-doubt hanging between them. "But I couldn’t believe it when he asked me out," Lily interjected, her voice barely above a whisper. "I mean, he’s this big, handsome guy, and I’m just a plain old boring girl." James laughed, his voice warm and reassuring, "You’re not just any girl, Lily. You’re special." The way he uttered those words tugged at my heart. I could sense that Lily was concealing something from him, a part of her life that she had yet to share. Although I became determined to uncover it, I convinced myself that'll be for some other time. As days turned into weeks, I often found myself in the same coffee shop, observing James and Lily at their usual table. Although they appeared engrossed in their world, laughter punctuating their conversations, the tension was palpable. Lily often seemed withdrawn, her laughter just a cover for something deeper. James, ever the eager partner, sought to coax her into opening up, but there remained an invisible wall between them. One fateful afternoon, as I was walking home from work, I noticed Lily sitting alone on a bench just outside the café, tears streaming silently down her cheeks. My heart ached at the sight; I couldn’t walk by without offering my presence. I took a seat beside her, a supportive figure in her isolation. "What’s wrong, Lily? Are you okay?” I gently asked, crossing the line from a stranger to someone genuinely caring. She didn’t respond, her gaze fixed on the pavement, signalling that she wasn’t ready to share her pain. Respecting her silence, I reassured her, "It’s okay. You don’t have to share anything if you don’t want to. Just know that I hope everything turns out alright." I remained seated, a comforting presence beside her. Eventually, the dam broke. Tearfully, she confided in me, revealing a profound truth: she had been born a man and was transitioning to become the woman she had always felt she was. Fear gripped her as she pondered revealing this to James, worried that it might shatter their relationship. Aa My heart shattered for her. How could James be so unaware of the struggles she faced, the identity she was courageously claiming? I felt an inner fire igniting, a mixture of anger and compassion toward James for not noticing the signs.
