Melody woke with a start early on Thursday morning, her pulse pounding, sweat breaking out on her body. She had the same nightmare that haunted her occasionally over the last four years. A pursuer caught up with her, and she relived the night Richard had assaulted her over and over again. Her legs shook when she pushed herself out of her bed, and she stumbled on her way to the bathroom. She splashed her face with cold water and stared at her reflection in the mirror. The shadows under her eyes appeared darker every time she looked. Two or three hours of sleep at a stretch since Monday night had started to wear her down.
