Chapter 2

The next morning, I logged onto Smart Shift and saw that my PTO was approved, so I texted Alison to let her know and then I got ready for work. When I finally arrived, Taylor greeted me with a hug. "Alison told me what happened with the email from management," she said as she stepped back, "and I think it's completely unfair that you didn't get the promotion. You deserve it more than anyone here." "Thanks Taylor," I said appreciatively as we headed to the back to clock in, "I can't tell you how many times I've asked for the floor manager position. You would think I was carrying around a contagious disease the way they were always blowing me off." "Why don't you just quit?" Taylor asked as we clocked in, "the way Viktor treats the female sales employees is disgusting. Just yesterday, he grabbed my ass and I told him that if he ever touched me like that again, I would have him arrested." "Did you report it?" I asked as we headed to the makeup counters, where we started to restock the merchandise. "Hell yeah I did," Taylor answered angrily, "right after it happened, I went straight to Connor to make a complaint and he said that he would look into it " "Let me guess, Viktor made it seem that it was your fault," I said as I restocked the perfume, "and Connor believed him." "Damn right he did," Taylor answered as she stocked eyeshadow. "I told Connor he would be hearing from my dad if the s****l harassment continued, he tried to write me up, but I refused to sign it." Taylor's dad, Mr. Harrison was a very high-end and well-known lawyer and he was known as the "lawyer from hell" because not only did he win every case he got, but the way he questioned defendants made them so nervous, they practically admitted to their crimes without even realizing it. "At least we have Fourth of July weekend to look forward to," I said as customers started to enter Bloomingdale's, "I so need a break from this hell hole." Taylor could only nod in reply because by now we were starting to get busy, and by by the time we could finally go on our lunch break, my feet were killing me. As Taylor and I were just sitting down, Viktor poked his head in the break room. "You ladies need to get back to work," he said rudly, "you can't keep customers waiting." "We're on our lunch break," I answered, I noticed that Taylor had her phone on her lap and it was recording, "in the state of California, employees are required, by law, to take a half-hour break. Taylor and I clocked out at our break at 12pm, so we'll be back at 12:30pm." "That's not my problem," Viktor said, crossing his arms, "I'm your superior and I'm telling you to get back to work, you'll get a break when your shift is over." "Well then you'll get a phone call from my dad and I'll sue you for not allowing us to take our required 30 minute break," Taylor retaliated. The look on Viktor's face was priceless and I had to hold back a snicker as he stalked out of the room while Taylor stopped recording. "You sure know how to shut people," I said with a smile as I continued to eat my salad, "you should've seen the look on his face." "Viktor needs to learn that I'm not going to let him walk all over me and threatening legal action usually shuts people up real quick." "You know he's going straight to Connor right?" Taylor just shrugged, nonchalant. "Viktor and Connor don't scare me," she said with a wave of her hand, "they know better than to mess with me or my dad." I had to agree with her there, Mr. Harrison was a nice family man, but in the court room, the man was damn scary. When Taylor and I came back from break, we were told by another staff member that Connor wanted to see us in his office. "Don't worry," Taylor muttered as headed towards Connor's office, "I'll be recording the entire conversation, if anything happens, it'll be our word against theirs." She then turned on her voice recorder on her phone and placed it in her back pocket. "Good afternoon ladies," Connor said as we entered his office, "Viktor told me that you were just sitting around doing nothing when he specifically told you to get back to work, so I'm going to have to write both of you up." "We were on our 30 minute break," Taylor said, "which is required by California state law." "We expect our employees to not only do what's expected of them, but to do their job well," Connor said, leaning back in his chair, "so if one of our mangers tells you to get back to work, you do so." "And what about our 30 minute break?" I asked, "California state law states___" "I don't care what the law states," Connor interrupted, leaning forward, "if you're not going to do your job, then there's no point in you being here, this is your final warning, now get back to work." And with that, he waved his hand, clearly dismissing us. "You ladies should know your place," Viktor said as Taylor and I walked out of Connor's office, "you're lucky you even still have a job here and to think Anna had the nerve to ask to be promoted to floor manager." "Ignore him," Taylor muttered as she hurried me along, "once our shift ends, I'll send everything to my dad and he'll take it from there." "Do you think those recordings will be enough?" I asked quietly as Taylor stopped the recording and put her phone back in her pocket, "I thought law suits needed more proof than that." "Girl, I've been collecting dirt on this place since I got hired here," Taylor answered with a shrug, and seeing my look of confusion, she whispered, "I'll explain later, right now, let's just get through the last five hours and then we can head to my dad's office and he'll explain everything."
