Genesee bent down to run her fingers through the still damp earth. Vacot’s agreement to talk to her was a small victory in itself, but it was only the first step in helping the costell. Knowing how deeply troubled Egan was, she was beginning to doubt whether she’d have enough time to give the man the surcease he needed in order to heal. Ailments of the heart and mind were not as easy to cure as the ones of the body.
“You need more rain. I’ll return later to give these lands another light soaking.” She straightened up as the surymander walked over to join her. Together they continued down the path that ran between the garden plots. Choosing not to prod the man for answers, she waited for him to speak when he felt ready.
