CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR
Audrey had been rushed through Accident & Emergency and was now in the Intensive Care Unit. Although her heart had a weak beat and she was breathing, her core temperature was still extremely low. The consultant physician had requested a haemodialysis machine, usually reserved for people with no kidney function. It was not easy getting the needles into Audrey’s thin veins, but after a few worrying minutes her blood started to pump through the machine where it was gently warmed.

‘She had nowhere to go apart from the river,’ Tony said to Andy, who was looking down at his son.
Tony was lying in bed in a bay in Accident & Emergency, also surrounded by warming pads.
