Roxanne
“Um…what are you guys doing here?” I asked.
“Checking on you, you’ve been weird!” Beatrix exclaimed. “We heard you say you were coming here, and we didn’t expect to see you in this particular store!”
“Who is this guy?” Remy demanded, glaring at Daxon.
Daxon stood up. “I’m uh…Dax. Roxanne and I are…well. You wanna take this one?”
“We’re old friends,” I rushed out. “Real old friends. I…Tyson and I were having problems and I ran into Daxon a few months ago and we reconnected and realized that we’re in love.”
“And you didn’t tell us?” Beatrix asked.
“I was ashamed that I cheated and Daxon is kind of…high profile. We just didn’t want there to be a scandal.”
“Wait, you're not Daxon Vaughn are you?” Remy questioned.
“Guilty,” Daxon laughed nervously.
“Holy s**t!” Beatrix gasped. “So that’s why Vaughn Showcase was considering picking up the movie!”
“Uh huh.” I nodded.
“How do you two know each other?” Remy gestured between us.
Daxon and I looked at each other. I hoped he knew what I was thinking.
“Camp,” We chorused.
Oh thank goodness!
“So…you’re engaged to a billionaire that you were having an affair with?” Beatrix clarified.
“It would seem so.” I answered.
“This week is insane!”
“I’m sorry we had to meet under such strange circumstances,” Daxon offered. “But you should know I intend to take care of Roxanne. She kinda saved my life.” He put his arm around me.
I wrapped my arms around his torso in response. Whew! He sure had some muscles under that suit! I rubbed his abs, mostly for my own pleasure. Like a f*****g washboard.
“And Daxon saved me. It’s like we were meant to find each other.”
“Um Daxon do you mind if we talk to Roxanne real quick?” Beatrix questioned.
“No, not at all. I’ll go make sure everything is okay with the bill.” Daxon kissed the top of my head before walking off.
“Rox, I don’t think this is a good idea,” Remy stated. “I mean you’re kind of jumping into this.”
“I know it seems fast, but I promise this is a good idea.”
“He’s a playboy, Rox. I’ve heard the stories. What if he’s using you for his image and he’s just gonna cheat on you?”
“He’s not like that, Rem.” I insisted. “I know this doesn’t make sense to you guys, but it makes sense to me!”
“But Roxanne, this is a pattern. You make rash decisions and jump into relationships with men you think can save you.” Beatrix said quietly. “And now you’re about to marry someone that we just found out about. Doesn’t that seem insane?”
I wish I could tell them what was going on, but I realized that was also insane. I just had to convince them that everything would be okay.
“Just…get to know him, you’ll see how good we really are together. Let’s get lunch tomorrow or something?” I suggested.
They both looked unsure, but nodded. “Yeah, alright, but I really don’t like this, Roxy.” Remy shook his head.
“You don’t like any guy I date,”
“They’re all losers.”
“Not this one,” I smiled slightly. “So lunch tomorrow?”
“Fine,” Beatrix rolled her eyes. “Love you Roxy Foxy.”
“Love you Bumblebee.” I reached out and squeezed Remy’s hand. “And I love you Mouse.”
“Love you McCloud,” Remy said reluctantly.
I watched them walk away.
“So…is our cover blown?” Daxon asked from behind me.
“No, but we have some work to do,” I informed him.
“And that is?”
“Get our story straight and learn everything we can about each other.”
Daxon
There was something about Roxanne that I couldn’t put my finger on.
I truly didn’t think I’d met anyone like her before. She had this strange lightness about her that made me feel anything was possible. I was sure she brought that to her acting.
I studied her as she sat across from me on the floor, slurping down the oysters she had so excitedly asked Christoph for. Something about her was so sexy to me.
“Alright, let’s get on with this,” I sighed. “When did we start dating?”
“We started seeing each other six months ago and got super serious three months ago.” Roxanne said thoughtfully.
“I have to be honest…I have f****d at least fifty women including my assistant in the last three months.”
“Is your d**k even still attached?”
“Yeah, wanna see it for yourself?” I grinned.
“Focus Daxon!” Roxanne snapped. “Look everyone already knows you’re a playboy. If anyone comes forward about sleeping with you, we say I already know and we’ve worked through it. People love a good redemption.”
“You’re good at coming up with things,”
“I used to write these scripts that I hoped would be made. I just have a good imagination I guess.”
“Um, any siblings?”
I was surprised when Roxanne tensed up. “I have a brother and a sister, but uh…I don’t speak to them anymore, so they’re not a factor.”
I hated Gideon, but I didn’t think I would ever stop speaking to him. “Why not?”
“Let’s just say my family is pretty f****d up, Daxon. Luckily this won’t be real so you don’t actually have to meet them.”
“So…no family at the wedding on your side?”
“It’s better that way,” Roxanne smiled sadly.
I wanted to know more, but I didn’t want to push her. She was right. This wasn’t real and so I didn’t need to know what happened. Yet, I was sad that she seemed so lonely.
“When’s your birthday?” Roxanne asked quietly.
“April twentieth. You?”
“May nineteenth.”
“It’ll be a busy Taurus season.” I chuckled. “Um…did you go to college?”
“Couldn't afford it,” Roxanne looked embarrassed. “You went to Yale right?”
Now I felt kind of embarrassed. “Yeah.”
“We’ve lived very different lives.”
“Yeah we have.” I agreed.
“No one’s ever going to believe you want to marry me,” Roxanne’s eyes widened and she started breathing heavily. “They’re gonna take one look at me a-and-and th-they’re gonna know th-this is all f-fake!”
“Roxanne, are you okay?”
It was almost like she didn’t hear me.
“Th-they’ll blackball m-me like you s-said! I’ll be a-a laughstock j-just like I was before. D-Daxon e-everyone will h-hate me a-again!”
I hurried over to her. “Roxanne, look at me! Babe, look at me!”
She forced her eyes to mine. “D-Daxon p-please I-I can’t d-do this!”
“Hey, hey, it’s okay,” My mind raced, trying to think of what would calm her down. “Roxanne, why don’t you um…name five blue things in the room?”
Her eyes darted around furiously. “The curtains, th-the pillow…my cup…the plate…your eyes.”
Roxanne’s breathing slowed down as she leaned against my chest. I hugged her.
“You’re okay. What was that?”
“I have panic attacks and I used to have a stutter…it comes out when I can’t focus. Sorry. I’m scared Daxon.”
“Don’t be. We’re gonna make this work. We’ll fool everyone. They’re going to think we’re real and then our dreams will come true. Just trust me babe.” I whispered, before kissing her forehead. “Okay?”
“Yeah, okay.” Roxanne nodded. She released me and slurped down another oyster, as though to calm herself. “Okay…what else do we need to know about each other?”
“Any prominent exes I should know about?” I questioned.
“Well Tyson of course. And there’s this kind of famous actor I used to have a kind of thing with, but that’s not relevant, he’d probably never admit it. Oh and I did have a girlfriend once.”
“Cool,” I chuckled.
“You?”
I wasn’t sure I actually wanted to tell her, but I knew it was better to hear from me.
“You won’t be my first wife,” I breathed.
“You were married before?” I nodded. “Well, what happened to your wife?”
“She married my brother.”
