I am a monster
Chapter 1.
Kara.
"Help, help... somebody help." I screamed as I struggled to get out.
I have no idea where I am or how I got trapped here.
My body felt stiff, my fingers pressed against something hard above me. Wood? Stone? I couldn’t tell. My heart wasn’t racing because I couldn’t feel it at all.
I kicked and pushed, dirt pouring in from every side. I pushed upward, not even knowing what I was fighting against. My hands broke through the wood and then I felt air. I was free.
I stood up, trembling and confused.
I was in a cemetery. Headstones surrounded me.
It was dark and silent but somehow… I could hear voices. Not just one but many. People talking, laughing, whispering, inside my head.
My legs were weak.
I didn’t know where I was, how I got here or even my name. But I knew one thing clearly.
I was starving.
I wandered aimlessly until I found a small 24 hours store with flickering lights. A man behind the counter looked up as I walked in.
I grabbed food, chips, chocolate, anything I could find. I ate fast, desperate for relief.
But it didn’t help.
My stomach still burned. My throat felt like fire. And then I looked at him, the store attendant.
His neck. His heartbeat.
Something snapped inside me.
Before I knew what I was doing, I was in front of him. My teeth, sharp, too sharp, sank into his skin.
Warm blood hit my tongue.
I didn't stop until I had sucked him dry, his body fell to the ground. I couldn't understand what just happened but strangely my hunger was gone.
I just killed someone.
I was shaking. My hands, my legs… everything. I stumbled out of the store, the world spinning around me. I could feel something warm running down my chin. I wiped it, then looked at my fingers. Blood.
That’s when I saw my reflection in the glass window.
My mouth was stained red. My eyes, glowing. And then… the fangs.
I stepped back, heart racing. What was I?
I turned and ran. Away from the store. Away from my reflection. Away from everything.
The streets were empty, but I could hear voices. Not just one… but many. Whispers. Conversations. Some laughing, others crying. And yet, no one was there. Just me.
I could smell everything, the air, the metal, the food in the trash, even the blood on my own skin.
It was all too much.
I kept running until my legs gave out and I collapsed in a dark alley.
My breath was shaky. My hands were stained with the blood of the man I had just killed.
Then I noticed something.
A pair of boots stood in front of me.
I slowly looked up. There he was.
Tall, pale and really handsome, he was dressed in black. The streetlight behind him made his sharp features even more intense. His icy blue eyes locked on mine.
"You shouldn't be out here alone," he said, his voice deep and smooth. He held out a hand, expecting me to take it.
I didn’t.
I forced myself up, keeping my distance. "Stay away from me. I don’t want to hurt you.
He chuckled softly, like I’d said something funny.
"You can’t hurt me, darling," he replied, stepping closer.
Then his eyes darkened, and he bared his fangs. Veins pushed up on his face. He wasn’t hiding what he was.
A monster. Just like me.
“So you see… you can’t hurt me,” he said again, and now he was standing right in front of me.
I stared at him, heart pounding. "You're a monster."
"And you're not?" he asked calmly.
I stepped back, shaking my head. “No. We’re not the same. Please… stay away from me.”
I turned and started walking. Anywhere. I just needed to get away.
But when I looked back…
He was gone.
I stood in the middle of the empty street, completely alone.
****
I stayed hidden the whole day.
I found an old abandoned building and that was all I needed to keep the sunlight out.
I had tried to leave earlier when the sun came up. I didn’t know what would happen. I just thought I’d step outside and find help. But the moment the light touched my skin, it burned like fire.
I screamed and ran back inside. My arms were red and blistered. It hurt so badly I couldn’t even cry.
I waited until it was dark again. The hunger came back. Stronger than before. My body was begging for something… something I didn’t want to need.
Blood.
I hated it. I didn’t want to hurt anyone. But the longer I stayed without feeding, the more my hands started to shake, and my eyes felt hot. Like something inside me was waking up.
Then I heard it.
A scream.
A woman’s voice, crying for help.
I didn’t know how far it was, but I heard it clearly, like she was right beside me. My body moved on its own. One second I was standing and the next I was running down dark streets, following the sound of her voice.
I found her in an alleyway, cornered by three men. They looked rough. One had a knife. Another grabbed her arm while she tried to pull away.
I didn’t think.
I attacked.
I grabbed the first man and bit him without hesitation. My fangs sank into his neck, and the moment his blood touched my tongue, it was like everything else disappeared. The hunger faded, and I felt alive again. Powerful. I drank until his body went limp.
The others tried to run. I was too fast. I caught them both, one after the other, and fed on them too. When it was over, I stood there, breathing heavily.
The woman was still there.
She hadn’t run.
She looked at me like I was some kind of monster. Her hands were shaking. I could hear her heartbeat pounding in her chest.
I took a step closer.
She stepped back.
“Please,” she whispered. “Don’t hurt me.”
I didn’t want to. I really didn’t.
But I couldn't control myself.
I reached out, grabbed her by the arms. She gasped in fear.
I leaned in. My mouth was open. My fangs were out.
And just as I was about to bite her,
Everything went black.
