It was the next day. Delancey had been acting a little off, her happy, pick me usual self was off-putting. Seren sat at her desk, peaking over toward Delancey and Rowan from a few rows off. Delancey had been around Rowan always... but this time. Seren felt that she was being left out a lot more often.
Rowan's texts had gone dry since, it was getting hard to feel close with him. They were engaged, but wedding plans had seemed nowhere to be heard. Seren's shoulders slumped a bit as she continued typing her report. The company was working on a new launch, and it seemed Seren was the only one who actually was focusing on it.
Suddenly two hands roughly grabbed Seren's shoulders, "Seren!" Seren turned around to see Delancey in high spirits. It was odd... considering she seemed to have had something bothering her earlier. "Aw... you're not wearing the earrings I gave you." Delancey's voice dropped in a disappointed low tone.
"Oh, sorry I just thought that today I should look a little less flashy. You look good today though Delancey!"
"I'll just have to buy you more things I guess." Delancey released her hands off Seren's shoulders.
"No, no It's okay, haha." Seren laughed a little awkwardly.
Delancey patted Seren's head before wandering off again. The previous interactions of Malrick soon flooded Seren's mind. Malrick seemed like a lonely guy with poor social skills. A man who doesn't know what to say. Was work all he knows how to do? Seren thought of what he could have been like as a kid.
A lonely child, fiddling around with the edges of his shirt standing awkwardly in a room full of people. Pity struct in Seren's chest at the thought. After work Seren did her rounds of goodbye to her co-worker's. Rowan had already taken off with Delancey. None of them seemed to had greeted her goodbye. It was getting too much. All of it.
Seren made her way to the underground parking garage, each clack of her low heels echoed against the walls of the parking garage. She just wanted a day alone with Rowan, just one day... where Delancey wasn't a part of. Delancey and Rowan had been friends since school long before she even met the two, but she didn't remember them being this close.
School wasn't the best experience back then, Delancey was her only friend. People had pitied Delancey for being friends with Seren, almost like a charity case. People were always so mean, always assuming there was a scheme at play every time I'd open my mouth. Delancey had defended me publicly every time. Even inviting me to hangouts with the people who talked badly of me, it was always uncomfortable. Delancey had good intentions back then, but it was never going to work out with her other friends.
Seren thought to herself as she came to a sudden halt at her car... the tires were completely flat. This wasn't some nail in the road incident... this was done carefully with something long and sharp. Seren walked around her car to inspect all four tires. Only three tires had been sliced open. This attack on her tires was done on purpose and it was aggressive.
"Hey... " A low, soft voice cracked through the silence of the empty car garage.
Seren whipped her body around to see Malrick's tall frame towering over her. His hands held behind his back as he softly smiled.
"Hey... " Seren spoke awkwardly than she intended too. For a split moment Seren saw his eyes glanced down at her tires, for a spilt second, she thought she saw a small grin form from the corner of his mouth.
"Oh no, what happened to your tires?" Malrick tilted his head to get a better look of the tires.
"I guess somebody doesn't like me here... " She sighed, driving her hand into her hair in frustration.
Malrick chuckled lightly, "I'm sorry that happened, I'll look for the culprit when I can. I was just about to go to my car, so it wouldn't feel right to leave you stranded here."
Seren's eyes widened at the offer, "O-oh, no. It's alright I'll just take an Uber." She chuckled lightly as well trying to seem less awkward. Seren pulled out her phone, "SOS?" she looked up at Malrick...
"There's no service down here unfortunately." Malrick continued to smile.
"Alright, I'll take your offer, I'll pay you back tomorrow."
"Sounds great." Malrick unlocked his car with his keys. A car beeped from the distance. "It's just right over here." He spoke while walking over to his car. Seren awkwardly followed from behind. She was engaged and it seemed weird being driven home by another man. "Here we are." Malrick slid into the driver's seat as Seren climbed into the passenger seat. His car smelled brand new, everything was polished. Not a site of dust to be seen.
"Is this car new?" she asked carefully.
"Not at all, I've had it for a while." Malrick begun backing out from the parking space.
"You must enjoy being clean then... " Seren thought of Rowan and his messy habits.
"I-it helps, clears my head." Malrick continued driving, his finger slowly tapping against the wheel.
"O-oh, uh here's my address!" Seren pulled her phone out.
Malrick glanced at the phone for a mere second before putting his eyes back on the road. "I know where that is, thanks."
"O-oh, okay." Seren put her phone back down.
"There's something you should know... " His voice trailed off. Seren stared at Malrick, confused. "Rowan's your fiancée... right?"
Seren's hands trembled, the question caught her off guard. "Y-yeah, I am... " She begun fiddling with her fingers. She had her own doubts, and she was afraid Malrick might confirm them.
Malrick glanced down at her hands, her fiddling already confirmed it. "So, you know... " his finger went right back to tapping on the wheel.
"K-know what... " she froze.
"You know... " his voice trailed off, longer than before. His finger tapping increased. Seren sighed, looking down at her fingers.
Malrick grinned lightly. "He's not a good guy." He spoke abruptly.
Seren's voice snapped "Don't tell me, who's good or bad. I know him good enough alright."
Malrick didn't respond. He just continued driving...
