Chapter 3: My Mate

Kai’s POV

I caught Amelia before she fell and held her. I breathe in deeply and take in her lovely scent. I cannot believe she is finally in my arms, even if she is unconscious. She must be exhausted from running and the rejection. I pick her up and carry her over to my bed. I lay her down gently and got in next to her to hold her. I tell myself my body heat will warm her, but I know it's also an excuse to be close to her.

I feel the slight tingles wherever our skin touches, and I can't help but smile. She is so beautiful with her long brown hair, bright amber eyes and cute button nose. Her lips are so full, and they look so inviting. I really want to kiss her right now, but I know I shouldn't. She is slightly tanned, and her body is perfectly toned. She has the body of a warrior, but still feminine enough to turn every head that passes by.

“If only you knew how long I have waited to have you like this, my mate.” I whisper and kiss the top of her head. “I hear a third heartbeat in the room, but it's very faint and fading fast. Is she with child?” Jasper, my wolf, asks me in my mind. “I don't know,” I answered in shock. I move and place my ear against her belly. Then I hear it, the faintest heartbeat and it sounds like it's in distress.

“What can we do?” I asked Jasper, in my mind. “I don't know, maybe we should try to wake her wolf. But I don’t know of a way to stop a miscarriage. I am so sorry.” Jasper answers and whimpers in my mind. “f**k!” I growl. I am about to get up, when I pick up the scent of blood. I lifted the blanket and saw that she was bleeding. She wasn't bleeding before, and she didn't have any visible wounds.

“It's our pup, he's gone.” I hear someone whimper in my mind. This must be her wolf, but how is she communicating with me already? That’s my thing, and I haven't allowed a connection to open. “Are you and Amelia okay? Is there no way to save the pup?” I asked her, over the connection she had created in my mind. “We are too weak to save the pup. Cruz and Bruno will die for this. I will kill them myself,” she growls. Oh no brother, what have you done?

“Amelia needs medical care, but she can't leave here. Cruz can't find her, or he will kill her. I can't force a shift now, it will only do her harm. Can you get someone you trust to help her please? You are our only hope. I don't know who you are, but I know you are part of our destiny. I can feel it. I feel a connection with you and your wolf. Please help Amelia,” she says, and I can hear she is getting weak.

“I will help you both. What is your name?” “Callie,” she answers. “Callie, Jasper and I have waited so long to meet you. You are magnificent. Rest for a bit. I will get you help. Please keep Amelia alive. I cannot live without the two of you. I will be back soon.” I answered and got up. I planted a soft kiss on Amelia’s forehead and closed her with the blanket. She needs to stay warm while I am gone.

I quickly got dressed, wore my mask, and grabbed my cellphone. I won't get a signal up here, so I will need to move closer to the pack lands. They are on high alert, and that means I need to be careful. I used the masking potion again and headed out. I have never been caught before, and I don’t plan on getting caught today. Amelia and Callie need me.

I reach the border where I know there is the least security. I hide in a tree and call Eliza. She is the only one I will ever trust with Amelia when she is this vulnerable. “Hey, is everything okay?” she asks when she answers. “I need your help. Some s**t went down at the pack. Now Cruz’s men are chasing Amelia. I got her to safety, but she was pregnant. Her wolf said she was having a miscarriage and she needed medical assistance. She is passed out in my bed,” I say, and she gasps.

“Go back home, I will be there when you get there. And be careful,” she says and ends the call. Witches and their portals really come in handy. Though, she could've come to get me too. Oh well, I will just have to run as fast as I can. I need to make sure Amelia is okay. I got down from the tree and made my way back home. By the time I got there, she was indeed already busy tending to Amelia.

“Thank you for coming, Eliza. You are the only one I trust with this,” I say. “Hush, no need for that. I vowed to help you and that extends to your mate too. You know how much I loved her father,” she says, and I smile. My mate... she doesn't know it yet, but we are mates. She will figure it out when she gets my scent. I just hope she doesn't hate me because of my i***t brother. I will tell her the truth when she is better, and hope that she accepts me.

“Will she be okay?” I asked Eliza. “Emotionally, she probably won't be. I can't heal that pain. But I did heal the rest. Her wolf was right, the pup is gone,” she says. Cruz, you are a f*****g i***t. You don't even know that you killed your own pup. I sat down next to Amelia and took her hand in mine. “I promise I will help you make this right.” I whispered and kissed her hand.

“Do you want me to stay until she wakes up?" “No, it's okay. Thank you for everything, Eliza. But I don't want to overwhelm her.” “Okay, be careful, and please be gentle and patient with her. Let me know if you need me.” she says and hugs me before she disappears through one of her portals. I just sit and watch over Amelia while she sleeps, never letting go of her hand.

I don't know how much time passes before I hear Callie in my mind. “Thank you for helping us. I am feeling much stronger. I sense magic was involved,” she says in my mind. “Yes, I have a witch friend who healed you. Is Amelia okay?” I ask. “She will wake up soon. I will tell her about the pup, so you don't have to. But I suggest you come clean and tell us who you really are. But let me speak to her first. Can you give us some privacy? I don't want her to lash out at you,” She says.

“I will be right outside. Just let me know when I can come back. I will tell you everything you want to know. I am so sorry about your pup, Callie,” I say, and she whimpers in my mind. “It's not your fault. Amelia doesnt know this, but when Bruno tackled us, he hurt the pup. I didn't want to tell her, because we needed to keep going. I couldn't have her break down, so I kept it from her. She will be okay, she just needs time,” Callie answers. I kissed Amelia’s hand and got up.

“See you soon,” I say, and leave the room and close the door. I won't listen in, they need this time to mourn together. “We need to make him pay.” Jasper growls in my mind. “We will, I don't care if he is my twin. He hurt our mate. I don't know if she will ever get over the loss of her pup. Something is definitely up with Cruz. It's like he is another person altogether.

All the years I have watched over them, I have never seen him ill-treat her. All I have ever seen is how much he loves her. So why would he harm her now? Something is off, and we will have to do some investigating.” I tell Jasper in my mind. “We will get to the bottom of this, but first we need to be there for our mate. We need to tell her the truth. The whole truth, Kai. We also need to claim our rightful place. She deserves to be an Alpha, not a rogue.” Jasper answers and I agree.

She deserves nothing but the best. I will make sure that she never has to go through anything like this ever again. She deserves to be treated like a queen, because that is what she is. But first, I need to come clean and hope she accepts our bond.
