Kiara's pov:
Huh? I'm pretty sure I put it here. Where is it?!
I threw the pillow on the bed and lifted it up again, as if by doing so they would materialize. The laptop holding everything I needed for my revenge, the small pouch of flash drives with it's frayed edges, and the file that contained all the documents.
Nothing.
My heart began to thud. A thick feeling clouded my throat and deep in my chest, my muscles were constricting around my heart.
It was right here. I made sure to tuck it carefully under my pillow before I left the hotel room. I inhaled shakily, the pillow slipped out of my grasp and fell to the ground with a soft thud.
Someone was here. Room service? Would they clean the room in my absence? Ignoring the subtle whisper of "it could be worse" at the back of my mind, I headed out of the room down to the front desk. The lady seated there flashed me a smile as I approached.
"Some items are missing from my room, number 47." I spoke, my voice trembled around the edges. I swallowed. "Was someone in my room?"
"Number 47," She said as she turned to her computer, her fingers flying across her keyboard. I waited, my fingers drummed into the marble counter as my insides twisted with fear. "Right! Your mate was here. He said he forgot something with you and needed them urgently."
Blood stopped flowing to my head.
"...my what?" My voice was lower than a whisper, all the blood in my veins turned to ice.
The woman, oblivious to what she had just did, smiled like she had won the lottery. She turned her computer to me and on the screen was a picture of Gregg.
I screamed and stumbled back. My hand flew to my mouth and clamped down. The woman frowned and glanced at the screen.
"Is anything wrong?"
"Why would you let him into m room?!" My voice came out high pitched. She flinched, shock flitting across her face. "Why?! Is that how you operate here?!"
"It's normal between mates." She said, frowning a bit.
I pursed my lips. Right. f*****g right. They still think we're mates. That means ...the video hasn't circulated yet.
My stomach twisted into a bundle of nerves. I couldn't tell if I was angry or frustrated more. The receptionist stared at me, asking if I was okay and if I needed to sit down.
Sit down?! Step one in my revenge plan has gone down the f*****g drain already. And I haven't even started.
This is bad. Worse than bad.
I walked out of the hotel to the closest ATM machine. My hands trembled as I dug into my purse for my card. I waited, scared and silently hoping. For anything.
Zero.
A big, flat zero stared back at me when I clicked balance. A shaky gasp clawed out of my throat and my eyes glossed over. He took it all. Not even a single dollar left to me. I grabbed onto the machine so I wouldn't fall over.
If I had known I'd be spending a night in that stupid beast cage, I would have hidden those documents better. Everything was there, including all the new passwords. Gregg must have changed everything. Again.
Why?! Why does it have to be this way?!
Hot tears stung my eyes, tears that I shoved down with everything inside me.
What do I do now? There's only a crumpled twenty in my purse. That's all I'm f*****g worth right now.
No. I can't let this happen.
I raised my head up and turned to the street. The sun was beginninh to set. By this time Gregg should be at home, right?
There was no time for me to think. I had to see him today. I can't walk away with f*****g nothing. Not after what I went through in his hands.
*******
The estate was as I remembered, the big house that radiated cold and hatred.
Except this time it was different. The porch was lit up with lights, loud music came from the inside, and all around the courtyard were luxury cars parked.
Anger brewed in my chest, and with it self hatred. I had a second shot at life. And even in this life Gregg was three step ahead of me. I did my f*****g best, I had it all in my hand.
I jumped out of the taxi and stormed my way to the front door. The closer I got, the livelier the party became. I squeezed my way through the crowd, the scent of expensive cologne clogging my nose.
"Congratulations! What an impressive feat," I heard someone say above the music and swarm of voices.
I walked into the foyer where a large banner that read "congratulations" hung from the stairs.
"Tell me about it," Another man replied. I recognised them both. Business associates of the company. I crept closer so I could hear more of their conversation. "No one thought he could join both our companies in such a short period of time."
The other laughed. "Yes. I must say I am impressed."
A merger?! In my absence?! Has he lost his mind?!
"Excuse me," a sharp voice cut through my angry thoughts. I looked up to see a tall, bulky looking bouncer. "Your invitation?"
I choked on air. "Invitation?! Don't you know who I am?"
He grabbed my arm and began dragging me out of the foyer, against my protests.
"I need to see Gregg! Let me go this instant!"
"No invitation, no entry." He replied coldly.
"This is my f*****g house too! I don't need an invitation to—"
"James. Let her go."
That voice. It was unmistakable. The bouncer, James, let go of my arm. I spun around and came face to face with Gregg. Except he wasn't alone. My sister perched on his arm, dressed in a red gown that I remember owning, wearing the diamond set that Gregg had gotten me for our first anniversary. Her red lips had a smile on them, a gesture that didn't reach her cold eyes. I turned to Gregg. It was easier to look at him, even as my heart boiled over in anger.
"How....how could you?" I asked, my chest heaving with each breath I forced into my lungs. "What are you doing right now?"
He held her closer to his side, it made me scoff. Wow. They aren't even hiding their infidelity anymore.
"I'm sure your eyes work fine, Kiara. Look around and figure it out." Gregg said in a lazy drawl, a smirk on his face.
I glanced around us. People had gathered, whispering, their lips stretched in mocking smiles. I faced the liar.
"You broke into my hotel room? How on earth did you even find me?!"
He laughed. The crowd laughed with him. My skin crawled like a million fire ants had burrowed under my skin. I wanted to hug myself, leave this place and vanish from their judging eyes and icy whispers. But seeing Gregg holding my sister's arm so shamelessly broke something inside me.
"Anyone with half a brain would erase the security footage. I thought you were smart, what a pity."
My face burned with shame. f**k. The CCTV! I hadn't thought to check it.
His eyes twinkled and he leaned in. "You're flushed. Easy now, I don't want you hurting yourself."
A large bitter lump formed in my throat and my hands balled into fists at my sides. Gregg noticed my internal turmoil and smirked. His eyes darted over my shoulder behind me.
"Where's your stand in? Gone?"
"You bastard." I hissed, my voice low and so full of hurt I hated how small it sounded.
"He got tired already? Bummer." Gregg said and turned to my sister. She gave him a sickly sweet smile that had my stomach turning in revolt.
"Figures." She said.
"That's even better." Gregg said and faced me. "It's time for the fool to know his place. What are you going to do about that?"
"This company, it's not yours alone." I spat through grit teeth. "You cannot do whatever you want. I have a right to half of it. I want it now."
He c****d his head to the side. An alarm siren went off in my head.
"Yours?" He asked with a chuckle. "Oh no, darling. You don't get anything. Not after the f*****g stunt you pulled."
"That's rich coming from you. After you f****d my—"
"I'd advice you watch your next words carefully, or it could end terribly for you. Now, get the f**k out of my house.”
