Robin stood at the River Banes border. In few minutes, a group of fighters from Oak Tails would be standing there with her. For now, it was only Wilder who managed to clear the pack soldiers away for 10 minutes. “How many of them will come?” Wilder asked. “20 or something around it.” Robin kept her eyes on the forest, looking at the darkness, listening to the quiet of the forest, waiting for something to disturb it.
Suddenly the noise filled the silence, Wilder could smell the unknown wolves and his first instinct was to run away. Robin pushed him behind, he wasn’t supposed to be seen with her, it would ruin the plan. The plan that she refused to know more of, the plan that was supposed to end with Wren back in River Banes and Robin on her way to Oak Tails.
Robin stepped towards the forest, leaving the River Banes border and the boy behind her. She smelt the wolves, 18 of them making their way towards her. She took a deep breath and stood taller with the familiar anger as a shield. The break was over, she was Beta Robin again.
Wilder saw how a dozen of wolves came to stop in front of Robin. He knew that Robin was the Beta but was still surprised when all of the wolves bowed to her as Robin stood fixed on her spot. One of the wolves went towards the trees and came back as a jacked man. They were the pack fighters, Wilder realized.
“Beta, we await your orders.” The man spoke and Robin nodded as she scanned the wolves. They were one of the strongest in the training group. Lucien was ready for a fight. “Good, the plan will be set in motion in an hour. You can’t wait here, it will grab attention. Go to the edge of the forest, near the exit to highways.” Robin spoke in a calm voice. Some of the wolves turned to look at each other and the man spoke again. “Alpha ordered us to go alongside you, from this border until ours.” Robin wanted to curse out Lucien but instead, she nodded and acted like she knew this fact all along.
“Of course, Lucien and I discussed this but the situation with this pack has changed. They are wary and for me to sneak the girl out unnoticed I can’t have you tailing me. This will bring extra attention to me.” Robin found the lies easy to call upon. Good, she thought, I will need to lie a lot today. The man nodded as if slowly thinking over her words. “They are wary?” he spoke and other wolves growled, signalling that they were ready to attack. Robin nodded, “Yes, but it is my task to calm them down. I have been successful so far, no need for a fight.” She spoke with a stern expresion and looked at each of the wolves individually.
They weren’t convinced and Robin was running out of patience and time to convince them, the pack soldiers guarding the border will be back any time. “Beta we should wait here, in case they follow you. You will need our help.” Robin growled and stepped forward. “Are you doubting my orders, soldier?” The man averted his eyes down and Wilder started listening with even more attention. “Beta, my team and I have been sent here to aid your mission.” He spoke and turned to the other wolves. Robin looked at them, the 17 wolves that kept looking at her and the man that stood in front of them.
She heard a snap of the twig from nearby, it was a sign from Wilder. She was taking too long, soldiers will be back in 3 minutes. The other wolves heard it as well and their attention snapped from Robin to the direction of the sound. Wilder was hiding behind one of those trees. Robin growled to get the attention back to her. “Go to the edge of the forest, I will be there with the girl in 40 minutes. You have wasted enough of my time.” Robin spoke and turned around to leave.
The man grabbed her elbow to get her attention and Robin snapped towards him with clear anger on her face. “Don’t you dare to touch me,” her voice was echoing with the strength of her wolf. The man took his hand back and looked down. She looked at the wolves who still dared to look at her. They should bow and leave. That’s what they were supposed to do 4 minutes ago. Yet here they were, looking at her, doubting her. “You seem to have forgotten who you are addressing. I am the Beta of this pack and if any of you doubt my skills you are welcome to challenge me.” She growled and kept walking towards the wolves. Some of them stepped back, while others stood fixed on their spots. Robin looked at the brown wolf that was still starring at her and arched her brow. “Any problems, mutt?” she mocked and the wolf growled at her.
Wilder kept looking and listening very attentively. Yet he still couldn’t see how in a second Robin had slammed the wolves head on the ground, nails digging to its fur. “I don’t need your or anyone else’s help. If I want to I can easily take the whole family of theirs back to Oak Tails on my own.” Robin hissed, Wilder couldn’t recognize her voice. This is the fear and power she was talking about. Wilder thought as he eyed the wolves who seemed to cover back. The more they feared her, the powerful she became.
One of the wolves leapt towards Robin, taking the chance to challenge her. Wilder was about to give his spot away and yell at her that she was about to be attacked. Wilder’s heartbeat out of his chest as the wolf jumped and he was too stunned to speak. The wolf had its mouth open, ready to bite the crouched down figure of Robin as she was still pinning the brown wolf to the ground.
The wolf was about to reach her when Robin let go of the brown wolf and grabbed a hold of her attacker. Her hands grasped its mouth and she growled, the wolf was trying to close its mouth but Robin held it open, her hands bloodied in the process. She rose from the ground, the wolf’s feet dangled in the air as Robin dragged it up with her. “Stupid move,” She chuckled and threw it towards the closest tree. The wolf’s back hit the tree’s trunk and it whimpered. Robin didn’t mind the blood as she looked at her pack members once more. They were all looking down now, she growled and they flinched. As they should. She thought and her wolf purred in agreement.
She felt their fear and nodded to herself, now they would obey. They will listen and do everything she asked. She was their superior, they should know it. She deserved their power. Robin realized that she was sounding like Lucien. She felt like ice-cold water was dropped on her. She stepped back from the wolves and took in a deep breath, she could feel their stares on her but didn’t want to look at them. Looking at them meant calling on that power once again. Still, she had a job to do, a k********g to fake, and the border soldiers were already back in their place, Robin heard their distant voices. She stepped forward and stood tall, the wolves looked at her. “What are you waiting for? Go to the edge of the forest. Now.” She ordered and they bowed before leaving. Robin waited there until she no longer heard their paws hitting the ground until they were far enough to hear her let out a shaky breath and walk towards the River Banes.
Wilder finally emerged from his spot and went towards Robin who was casually walking back. As if she didn’t just grab a wolf by its jaw and nearly knock it out by the sheer force of throwing it to the tree. “That went well,” he said sarcastically as Robin fell to a step beside him. She chuckled, “yes, couldn’t have gone better.” Wilder shot a look at her, her eyes were grey but her voice was still sounding different, it was different than the voice of her wolf. “Oh, for f***s sake,” Robin mumbled and sighed. Wilder could see the dark spots under her eyes as she closed her eyes and tried to calm the part of her that craved power. “You alright?” Wilder asked and was surprised by how his own voice was just above a whisper.
Robin opened her eyes and spoke with her usual voice. “well, I have to fake kidnap your sister in 15 minutes. How alright you think I am?” Wilder chuckled. They passed through the border and Wilder nodded at them. He was of high ranks as well but his relationship with the pack members was much different than what Robin just had with her pack members. “You sure they will wait for you and not just run back home? After that kind of welcome, I’ll just go home.” He joked though Robin sensed a tone of criticism in his words. She shouldn’t have been this harsh.
“They will, by Oak Tails standards, I was kind. If it was Lucien, that wolf’s jaw would be ripped apart.” Robin said and Wilder raised his brows in surprise. “Oh, your hand.” He said as if just remembering it took Robin’s hands in his for inspection. Robin hissed as his fingers touched her cut covered palm. Wilder stopped and mumbled sorry as he tried to look at the cuts. “They don’t look deep,” he noted, some of them were still bleeding.
Robin’s phone rang and Wilder let go of her one hand so she could pick it up. “yeah?” she spoke as they started walking again. “How did it go? You coming back?” Wren asked and Robin sighed. “Yeah, they will be on the edge of the forest. We are on our way back.” Robin said and Wren sighed in relief. “Great, we are waiting for you.” With that, they hung up.
Robin and Wilder made their way back to the Alpha House. Robin realized that they were holding hands when Wilder gave it a squeeze to get her attention. “4 days, remember? Be back in 4 days. Even if you don’t get any plans.” Robin wanted to chuckle and joke about him worrying about her being a bad double agent, but as she looked at him and his black eyes seemed even darker. She just nodded and squeezed his hand. “I will come back.”
