Her Dark Knight (Book 1 Of The Nightmare Pack)

I couldn’t help but stared at the giant house in front of me. The pack house we lived in was huge, well that is what it seemed like to me. Then again, I was only five years old, so most houses seemed huge to me. I jumped when thunder rang out above us. I looked up to see the sky dark as a raindrop landed on my forehead making me flinch. “Come on Kahil. Let’s get inside before the rain starts to come down harder.” dad told me. “Okay.” I replied. I hurried to follow dad, I didn’t want to get soaked, as we walked up to the door. The door opened as we stepped up to it. I remember seeing the guy standing in front of us when King Khattar had come to visit with Queen Frejya. That was not long after they had found out that the Queen was pregnant. “It’s good to see you again Gordon. Damn, Kahil, you have grown since the last time I saw you. Come on Khattar and Frejya are waiting in his office for the two of you.” the guy commented. “It’s good to see you again Brinley. Yes, he is growing like a weed.” dad replied. I followed behind them as we walked through the hallways. I heard some noise coming from one of the rooms we passed. I stopped to peak through the crack in the door. I smiled when I saw Kolter along with his sister Tanaiy. There were other kids with them. They were playing my favorite video game. Kolter was the same age as I was while Tanaiy was two years younger than I was. I was going to go in, but I heard dad call me, so I hurried to catch up with him and Brinley. It seemed like we walked forever before Brinley stopped in front of a huge wood door. He pushed open the door, without knocking, allowing us to walk into the room. King Khattar was sitting in a large leather chair behind a huge desk while Queen Frejya was sitting in a chair off to the side. She was rubbing circles in her stomach. Dad had told me that she was due to have the baby in about two months. He also told me that they still had no idea if they were having a boy or girl. I stood there as dad and King Khattar shook hands. Queen Frejya was smiling at me. She patted the seat beside her, so I went over and sat down. I could feel strong magic or power coming from her. I don’t remember her being this strong. “I swear you double in size every time I see you, Kahil.” King Khattar pointed out. “He is a growing boy.” Queen Frejya added. “That he is. I am positive that he is going to be taller than me.” dad commented. “Well, is the kingdom welcoming a prince or princess?” dad asked. “That is an excellent question. The little troublemaker still refuses to show us if we are having a prince or princess.” King Khattar grumbled. We all looked up when the door to the office opened once again to reveal the previous dark fey and elf kings. King Odin, the previous dark fey king, and Phillip, the previous dark elf king, walked in. Queen Frejya was the princess to both kingdoms. If I remembered what dad had told me the current dark fey king was her father, and her mother was the princess to the dark elf kingdom. The current dark elf king was Queen Frejya’s brother, I think. I watched as they all greeted each other. I caught movement out of the corner of my eye. I saw Queen Frejya flinch. “Are you okay, Queen Frejya?” I asked. “Kahil, you do not need to use my title. I am fine, the baby is highly active right now. I think the little one likes you.” she told me. I looked up to see the others watching us. Queen Frejya asked if I wanted to feel the baby move. She took my hand and placed on her stomach. I jumped when I felt a hard kick land against my hand. I felt another one along with Queen Frejya’s power flicker. “I still say the little one is a boy.” Odin commented. “No, Queen Frejya is having a girl.” I announced. “Kahil, why do you say that?” dad asked. “I can tell. The little one in there is a girl. Queen Frejya smells like the dark spiced rum that William drinks only there is a hint of dark chocolate to it.” I repeated. They were all staring at me. I am not sure why, but they were. I kept my hand on her belly as more kicks landed against it. Dad told me to go find Kolter after a while. I looked at him. I wanted to find Kolter and play some video games, but I didn’t want to leave Queen Frejya and the baby. I felt weirdly protective of the little one. There was a knock at the door before Kolter’s head peaked into the room. I left with him, but I was not happy about it. I had been with Kolter and the others for a while now while dad was still discussing things with the others. I was on my way back from the kitchen when I heard voices. “That b***h is ruining everything. I knew Khattar should have never gone to that damn meeting that time.” a woman hissed. “You should get over it. They have been fully mated for over 300 years now.” a man told her. I peeked around the corner to see who was talking. I recognized Kolter’s mother, Melody, but I had never seen the man before. That didn’t mean he wasn’t supposed to be here. I leaned back so they wouldn’t see me as I listened to what they had to say. There was another guy standing beside them but again I hadn’t seen him before. “Now that hybrid w***e is pregnant with that little abomination. They are ruining everything. Khattar is mine and I am going to get rid of the two of them.” Melody growled. I heard them walk off, so I hurried back to the game room where the others were. I was not sure what Melody meant but I knew she was going to cause trouble. I knew that she couldn’t do anything to Queen Frejya. Queen Frejya was so much more powerful than Melody and I had seen her put Melody in her place a couple of times. I hung out with Kolter and the others for a while, but I decided to find dad. I also needed see Queen Frejya to make sure that her and the baby were okay. I stopped outside of the door to King Khattar’s office, which was cracked. “Do you think he is right? That I am having a girl and how would Kahil know this?” Queen Frejya asked. “I do not know.” King Khattar answered. “The only reason I can come up regarding this is that Kahil and your unborn child are mates. I have never seen it happen before, but I have heard about situations like this, and I have read about it.” dad told her. “I know I have seen it once or twice before and I believe Odin has as well.” King Phillip pointed out. “Phillip is right I have seen it once before. It was well over 1000 years ago.” King Odin told them. I might be five years old, but I am not stupid. Mom has told me about mates and how they find each other. I had been thinking about this since dad told me to find Kolter. I was not sure what it all meant but I was determined to understand what it all meant. We had been back in the pack for a week. Mom had thrown me a huge birthday party yesterday. While I love celebrating my birthday that also means that school will be starting back up in a couple of weeks. That was the only thing bad about being born in the middle of August. I am six now. I had heard mom and dad talking a couple of days after we had gotten home. He had told mom what I had said about the baby that Queen Frejya was having. Mom agreed with dad about the baby that Queen Frejya was having being my mate. “Hey, are you going to play or daydream?” Quade asked. “Sorry, I was thinking about something.” I answered. “Come on, we only have a couple of weeks left of summer before we are going to be stuck inside the school again.” Terrance whined. “Terrance is right. Let’s go outside and see what we can find to do. Oh, I know, we can go to the pond. You know the one with the waterfall.” Xakeem told us. The four of us headed outside. Lamar, Sean, Cash, Alec, Rian, Clark, Shay, Deaton, and Borris were sitting around the pool. Blakely, Tahesya, and Winney (the only girls in our little group) were there also. They were all kids of the top warriors and trackers in our pack. We have known each other since we were in diapers, well that is what mom told me. Quade would be my beta, Terrance would be my gamma, and I was going to make Xakeem my delta. Xakeem and his little sister, Zahyndry, were taken in by their uncle who is my father’s current Delta. Their parents were killed in a rogue attack when we were three years old. Zahy was only weeks old when that happened. Her and my little sister, Desyrae were the same age and were always together. Xakeem told them where we were going. Our group made our way through the forest until we came to the pond. I am not sure how long we had been out there when we heard something behind us. Thomas, Shay’s dad, and Carl, Deaton’s dad were standing there. Both of them had their arms crossed over their chests. They didn’t look happy. “I told you I smelt them.” Carl commented. “You kids know you are not to be out here without at least one or two adults. Come on let’s get you back.” Thomas sighed. “But dad we are having fun.” Shay whined. “It doesn’t matter let’s go.” Thomas told us. Mom and dad were not happy that we had been out there by ourselves. All the parents were waiting for us as we walked up. I am sure Thomas and Carl had linked them telling them where they had found us. I got a long lecture about being that far without adults. I guess the summer fun was over. I sat up in bed and looked around. I glanced at the time, 4:15 am. I turned on the lamp that sat on my beside table. I looked at my calendar. Thankfully, it was Saturday and not a school day. I knew I was not going to get back to sleep anytime soon. I felt weird but I had no idea why. It was November 4th. I was not sure what was special about today, but something was happening. I was lying in my bed when it felt like something in me clicked opening something within me. It didn’t hurt but I was not sure what was going on. I climbed out of my bed. I slipped out of my room losing the door. I was heading for my parent’s room when I heard my dad’s voice coming from his office. The door to his office was not closed all the way so I pushed it open. “Baby, what are you doing up?” mom asked. “I woke up and I can’t go back to sleep.” I replied. “Are you okay?” dad asked. “Yes, but I have a weird feeling.” I admitted. “What does this weird feeling feel like?” mom asked. “It doesn’t hurt but it felt something with in me clicked opening something within me.” I answered. Everyone in the room looked at me. No one was talking. Mom explained that dad had received a call from King Khattar letting us know that Queen Frejya had gone into labor and was about to have her baby. I was sitting beside mom as the others talked. We were waiting for King Khattar to call and tell us that the baby had been born. I laid my head on mom's thigh. I woke up to mom running her hand through my hair. I heard dad talking to someone who I was guessing was King Khattar. I sat up rubbing my eyes as dad hung up the phone. He had a huge smile on his face. “Queen Frejya had a little girl at 4:15 am. She weighed in at 7 lbs. 8 oz and was 22 inches long. She has a healthy set of lungs on her as I could hear her wailing in the background.” dad announced. Mom hugged me as everyone began talking. The princess was born the same time I woke up. I knew that it meant something but what it meant I was not sure. I was still trying to figure out why I didn’t want to leave Queen Frejya and the baby or how I knew it was a girl. I had been looking for anything in the books in our library in the pack house but so far nothing. Aunt Teresya was back from her trip. I would ask her. I heard mom mention something about visiting the Kingdom soon. While I wanted to visit the new princess, I wanted to understand what was happening. I knew then there was going to be a lot more reading in my future.
