Chapter 1: The New Beginning
Miki Jin shuffled down the crowded hallway of New East High School, his eyes fixed firmly on the floor. Despite being surrounded by classmates, he felt a familiar sense of isolation. His chubby frame and introverted nature made him an easy target for teasing, but he had learned to navigate high school by staying as inconspicuous as possible. Miki found solace in his own world of comic books, K-pop, and late-night sketching. He preferred the company of fictional heroes to the unpredictable world of his peers. Yet, beneath his shy exterior lay a secret: Miki was gay. He had known it for years, but in this conservative community, he feared the consequences of coming out. The only place where he truly felt free was in the privacy of his room, where he sang his heart out, letting his lovely voice express what he couldn't say aloud. Today, however, was different. Miki had a new class: physical education. He dreaded it, as his lack of athletic prowess often made him the last pick for any team. As he approached the gym, he took a deep breath and braced himself for the familiar discomfort. Inside the gym, the students were gathering in small groups, chatting and laughing. Miki's eyes landed on Jax Armstrong, the school's swimming star. Jax was everything Miki was not: tall, lean, and effortlessly charming. His infectious smile and bright blue eyes made him a magnet for attention. Miki watched as Jax effortlessly juggled conversations with friends, exuding an aura of confidence and joy. Jax noticed Miki standing alone by the bleachers and decided to approach him. "Hey, you're Miki, right?" Jax said, flashing a friendly grin. "I'm Jax. Nice to meet you." Miki's heart raced. "Hi," he managed to reply, his voice barely above a whisper. "Nice to meet you too." "You look a bit nervous," Jax observed. "Don't worry, PE isn't so bad. I mean, it can be fun if you let it." Miki nodded, unsure of what to say. Jax's presence was overwhelming, but in a strangely comforting way. It was as if Jax's warmth and positivity created a bubble of safety around them. "How about we partner up for today's activities?" Jax suggested. "It'll be more fun that way." "Okay," Miki agreed, feeling a flicker of hope. As the class progressed, Jax's encouragement and easygoing nature made the physical exercises more bearable for Miki. Jax showed him some basic moves, patiently guiding him through each step. For the first time, Miki didn't feel like a misfit in PE class. After class, Jax and Miki walked together to the locker room. "You did great today, Miki," Jax said. "You're stronger than you think." "Thanks," Miki replied, a small smile tugging at his lips. "I couldn't have done it without your help." "Anytime, buddy," Jax said, clapping Miki on the shoulder. "By the way, are you into music? I heard you humming earlier. You have a great voice." Miki blushed, surprised that Jax had noticed. "Yeah, I like singing," he admitted. "It's kind of my thing." "That's awesome! Maybe you can sing for me sometime," Jax said enthusiastically. "I love music too, especially dancing. Maybe we can collaborate on something." Miki's heart swelled with a mixture of excitement and nervousness. "I'd like that," he said softly. As they parted ways, Miki couldn't help but feel that today was the beginning of something new. Jax's friendship had opened a door to possibilities he had never dared to dream of. For the first time, Miki felt a glimmer of hope that maybe, just maybe, he could find his place in this world—and perhaps, even someone to share it with.
