EPISODE 5: Lines We Can’t Uncross It started small. A glance too long across the table at breakfast. A lingering touch when no one was watching. A text I shouldn’t have replied to. But the night it happened, there was nothing small about it. Liam had gone to a late business dinner, promising he’d be back before midnight. I was curled up in the guest room with a book I wasn’t really reading, the hum of the house pressing in on me. A soft knock broke the silence. I didn’t have to open the door to know who it was. But I did anyway. Cameron stepped inside without a word, closing the door behind him. His eyes swept over me like he was memorizing every detail. “You should go,” I whispered, but my voice didn’t sound convincing. “I’ve been trying,” he said, moving closer, “but you’re in my head every second.” “Cameron—” “You’re marrying my brother, Rory,” he said, voice cracking just enough to sound human again. “You’re choosing the safe road. But tell me you don’t dream about the other one.” I swallowed hard. “That road nearly destroyed me.” “But it gave you life before it took it away.” His hand brushed mine. “Don’t tell me you don’t remember.” I did. God help me, I did. He stepped closer until there was no space left between us. “You can lie to him,” Cameron whispered, “but don’t lie to me.” I should have walked away. Should have told him to leave and locked the door behind him. Instead, I kissed him. It wasn’t gentle. It wasn’t careful. It was every unsent letter, every sleepless night, every what-if poured into one dangerous, breathless collision. When we finally broke apart, my head was spinning, my chest heaving. “I can’t do this,” I said, though my hands were still on him. “You already did,” Cameron murmured. And that’s when the sound hit me— A faint creak from the hallway. The kind of sound a floorboard makes when someone is standing there.
