Chapter 1
Lexi Thompson stepped out of her cozy cottage and into the warm sunlight, gazing out at the rolling hills of Willow Creek. She took a deep breath, feeling the sweet scent of blooming flowers fill her lungs. This was her happy place – surrounded by beauty, creativity, and the gentle hum of small-town life. As she made her way to her venue, Petal & Pine, Lexi's mind whirled with excitement. Today was the day she'd meet the infamous Ethan Black, a mysterious stranger who'd commissioned her to plan a high-profile wedding. Rumors swirled around him like a vortex, but Lexi didn't believe everything she heard. She was determined to make this wedding perfect, no matter what secrets Ethan might be hiding. As she opened the door to Petal & Pine, a tall, dark-haired man stood before her, his piercing blue eyes locking onto hers. Lexi's heart skipped a beat. Ethan Black was even more handsome than she'd imagined. "Hi, I'm Ethan Black," he said, his deep voice sending a flutter through her chest. Lexi's hand trembled slightly as she took his. "Lexi Thompson. Nice to meet you, Mr. Black." Ethan's gaze lingered on hers, and for a moment, Lexi thought she saw a glimmer of something more. But it was quickly replaced by a brooding intensity that made her wonder what secrets he hid. As they shook hands, Lexi felt a spark of electricity. She couldn't help but notice the way Ethan's eyes crinkled at the corners or the way his hair curled slightly at the nape of his neck. "Please, call me Ethan," he said, his voice low and smooth. "We're going to be working together closely, after all." Lexi smiled, feeling a sense of ease wash over her. "Of course, Ethan. Let's get started on the wedding plans, shall we?" As they sat down to discuss the details, Lexi couldn't help but steal glances at Ethan. There was something about him that drew her in, something that made her want to know more. As they delved into the wedding plans, Lexi found herself growing more and more comfortable around Ethan. But despite their easy banter, she couldn't shake the feeling that he was hiding something. "Ethan, can I ask you something?" she said, her curiosity getting the better of her. "Of course, Lexi," he replied, his eyes narrowing slightly. "What's the story behind this wedding?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "You're not exactly the type to throw lavish parties, are you?" Ethan's expression turned guarded, and for a moment, Lexi thought she saw a flash of fear in his eyes. "It's complicated," he said finally, his voice tight. "Let's just say I owe someone a favor, and this wedding is part of it." Lexi's mind raced with possibilities. Who did Ethan owe a favor to? And what did it have to do with the wedding? Just then, a knock at the door interrupted them. It was Victor Vex, Ethan's business partner. "Ethan, we need to talk," Victor said, his voice dripping with malice. Ethan's eyes locked onto Lexi's, and for a moment, she thought she saw a warning there. "Excuse me, Lexi," he said finally, standing up. "I'll be right back." As he left the room with Victor, Lexi couldn't shake the feeling that she was in over her head. As soon as Ethan was out of earshot, Lexi's curiosity got the better of her. She crept closer to the door, trying to listen in on their conversation. "...don't think you can trust her," Victor was saying. "She's too nosy, too curious. She'll figure out what's going on if you're not careful." "I can handle Lexi," Ethan replied, his voice firm. "Besides, I need her for the wedding. She's the best in the business." Victor snorted. "You're not thinking with your head, Ethan. You're thinking with your heart. And that's going to get you killed." Lexi's eyes widened as she realized the true extent of Ethan's secrets. What was going on? And what did Victor mean by "get you killed"? Just then, Ethan and Victor stormed back into the room, their faces tense. "Lexi, I think we've covered enough for today," Ethan said brusquely. "Let's reconvene tomorrow, shall we?" Lexi nodded, still reeling from what she had overheard. As she packed up her things and left Petal & Pine, she couldn't shake the feeling that she was in grave danger.
