21 Fire A series of thumps and bangs on the wall of the trailer roused Mort and Jake from a fitful sleep. “What’s that?” said Mort. Jake rose up on his elbows. “Someone’s out there,” he said. They heard a muffled voice. “Get out, whoever’s in there. Get out of my trailer.” They both looked at the doors. A tall slit of light marked the spot where the two doors almost met. The slit widened and the door creaked. Sharp morning light spilled into the cab, stinging Jake’s and Mort’s eyes. They put up there hands for shade and squinted.
