Dan woke up feeling groggy, his mouth felt like something had crawled in and died, his headache as if a mini earthquake had rumbled through his skull. No wine could intoxicate someone so badly that they felt this was what pointed to foul play, especially since his jaw felt like he'd been hit multiple times and with no remorse. This all pointed to Hera, his father's wife.
He sat up wincing when his side sent shooting pain, he glanced down to the wound, a stab wound. Hera had not been joking around huh. What the hell had he done to deserve her ire this time. He tried remembering what he'd been doing yesterday–nothing , the day before also nothing. In fact as he sat down he realized he had no memories of at least two weeks.
He looked for his shirt and around him hoping he could note where he was, pausing he glanced over the room, it was a fine room the walls painted in a garish green color but the furniture was fine and classic and one of the chairs had his shirt splayed on it and he reached for it.
"Oh good you're awake," a voice said, turning he came short at the sight of the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen.
She had curly blonde hair that reached her shoulder, full pink lips and her eyes were a clear oak brown that sparkled with emotion followed by a pert nose, she said lips were moving and through the droning, in his ears, he heard her voice.
"Here are some aspirins and water, Camilla wants you to come down for dinner," she said, dropping both on the table before leaving, making him realize that he had not said a word in return. Cursing himself all kinds of fools he picked up his shirt and the bottle of water downing it and ignoring the medicine,he didn't feel like being loopy anyway.
He worked his way down the stairs listening to the voices, and letting them lead him, into a large opulent kitchen and two women who sat at the counter as they shared some food and chatted amicably
" Ladies, good evening" he greeted, the elderly woman he assumed was Camilla smiled nodding at him to the table.
"Sit boy and eat, you must be famished," she said dishing a plate.
"Thank you. I am sorry to inconvenience you, I think my friends played a prank on me.”
"Dumping you drunk in the ocean ," the woman from earlier asked snidely, which convinced him that she didn't like him at all.
"No, the drinking was all me, the abandoning me to the crazy gang " he replied, returning his thoughts to the meal in front of him, he was tempted to ask for wine but he resisted.
"What is your name boy," Camilla asked, clearly not deterred by her employer's hostility, smiling gratefully as he raised his fork to his mouth.
"Dan Vineras" he replied, Camilla hummed in satisfaction before deftly escaping the room, he would have chuckled if not for the scowl dotting his hostess's face.
"I can tell you don't like me much," he said, for it was not a question.
" I have a distaste for alcoholics." She answered politely eating at a faster pace, he sighed, it was his luck that the first woman to intrigue him in centuries was adamant to his charms.
"I assure you that is not the case considering I was injured but I will be out of your hair" he answered on a grin that he was sure confounded and irritated her but he casually slide his solo today was not the day to win her that would come very soon.
He finished his soup with all the ease of a renter at a hotel which gave his host the time to scowl and steam, he further insisted on doing the dishes with her grazing against her in a cool fashion that didn't attest to his plots once done he walked to the door while she followed by him.
"I am most grateful for your hospitality," he said taking her hand and pressing his lips to it, if he had not been certain before the electricity that raced through his skin confirmed it - he would be pursuing this woman fervently. She blushed prettily before pulling her arm from his grip.
"Good night Mr. Vineras." She said locking the door in his face, Dan managed to get as far as her gate before he laughed.
As it was a pretty night he attempted to walk,he was on the island of Balas which meant he'd been thrown into the sea by his attackers the roads were familiar so he followed the route to his home, the best thing about the island was he owned personal property on it and Hera had no clue, so he was mostly safe.
He had only walked a safe distance when a gush of wind made him tense, he knew who came with that much presence - Mira, gangster extraordinary. She was not a friend of Hera's but she wasn't a friend of mine either.
"What do you want Mira," he asked as he strolled on.
"I am here because I am watching you.”
"At whose behest, surely not Hera's he questioned subtly implying she was Hera lapdog which made her scowl.
" be careful Dan I take offense" she murmured and he smiled
"By all means tell me why you are here.”
" Despite your unwelcoming way I worry for you, it's only a matter of time before Hera finds out that you're here alive well –," she said walking slowly with him, she gazed around the world she had once presided over with a soft sigh.
"And, why would Hera care for my business.”
" Oh Dan, it would only take one tiny incident to have her all over you.”
"Remember, what happened before, Hera hates you most because Chandler once fancied himself in love with your mother," Mnemosyne said and Dan knew this was true, yet he asked.
"You don't think he was in love with her" and the goddess shrugged.
" I don't doubt that he thought he was, he was besotted with Josh's mother and if not that the woman was dead and her son had changed his name and disappeared. Hera would have schemed much worse" she answered.
"Your father- he can't help it, it's inbuilt to stray, it's his nature but you have the consequences to carry so you must tread carefully.”
Dan listened and heard, as much as he resented his father, a man who couldn't control his impulses for women, Chandler Vineras had ten children, from women not his wife and everyday we hoped for the kids sake no one was added to the crew.
There was no way around this life he now lived
"I need you to do me a favor," he said knowing full well he would have to repay one sooner or later, that was the currency of gods.
"What do you need," she asked, waving a hand.
"I want you to distract Hera until I have a game plan" he said, Mira watched him incredulously, he needed time to get his memories back figure out why she was after him.
" You do know I can not keep her occupied for long"
" We both know she fancies young men. There are millions in the Northern American continent, make it a vacation of sorts" he answered and the goddess scowled.
"You will owe me big time, Dan" she grumbles before disappearing into the night.
Dan glanced at the sky and shook his head before strolling the remaining steps to his home, he entered the foyer and jogged up the stairs to his room.
The house was an old apartment he had renovated to a penthouse suite, he pulled out his keys and opened the door, his head throbbed slightly as a memory came to him.
***********
"I should not have let you talk me into this.”
Dan said as he straightened to his full height, like his brother he was tall standing at six feet and few inches more both men were larger than the average male which was not a surprise as their father was a tall good-looking man both also enjoyed a good fight one more than the other.
"You would not have been able to resist," the other man answered, wiping blood from his lips.
Henry was his father's second child out of wedlock and one of Dan favorite siblings
"I would have but friends are for the good and bad" Dan replied on a shrug, it did not matter that the man was his brother a good fight was all that mattered.
"Ah my friend we live for the excitement, life is otherwise tedious without it.”
"You say that because you can go back to the mountain home and evade her" he replied.
Dan was on a punishment of sorts.
He was here now because he had refused to attend the banquet of Chandler and Hera, which had offended the latter but it did not matter after all everyone knew that Hera hated all Chandler bastard children and he could not fault her for it - Chandler was prone to infidelities it was in his nature and was one which Dan had forced himself to abandon.
His cards had been cut and he was now under the ultimatum to get married and inherit, they all were but most of his siblings didn't care.
" That is possible, but you are my friend and I will come to visit from time to time," Henry replied, grinning as he slung his arm over his shoulder.
"The rest of the time would be spent chasing skirts, yes" he joked and chuckled.
" You know me well my friend.”
"So when will your punishment end?" Henry asked.
"At Heras next banquet so I can make up for my sins, and with her that should be soon" nodding in agreement Henry paused.
" I will leave you here. I am needed soon," he said distractedly as he watched a woman in a short skirt cross the street, laughing as he watched him go.
Dan continued walking towards the next bar that would favor him with good wine, so far his punishment was going well.
The memories stopped leaving him with a headache well he had to find out what was going on until then there was a blond bombshell who had caught his attention.
