Chapter 5 : You can't hide forever Nadia urged us to retreat, but I couldn't bear the thought of turning back now, not when freedom seemed so close at hand. I whispered my plan to her, to hide in the shadows and wait for the guards to fall asleep before making our move. Despite her anxiety, Nadia agreed, her eyes filled with fear and wavering. We moved as quietly as possible to the darkest corner of the tunnel, squatting down and holding our breath. The guards continued to speak, their voices becoming more and more subdued. I could tell that they were tired, and their minds were beginning to drift off to sleep. My heart was racing, and I felt a bead of sweat rolling down my forehead. I looked at Nadia, whose eyes were wide with fear. We sat there, frozen in place, as the guards' voices became softer and softer. Just as I was starting to think we might have a chance to escape, I heard a sudden rustling sound. My heart leaped into my throat as I turned to see a small rat scurrying across the floor of the tunnel. The guards also heard the sound and jumped to their feet, looking around wildly. My heart was pounding as I held my breath, praying that they wouldn't notice us. I spread my palms over Nadia's mouth to prevent her from making any sound. The guards stood in the centre of the room, their eyes darting back and forth. Then, slowly, one by one, they sat back down and resumed their conversation. I let out a breath I didn't even know I was holding, feeling relief wash over me. Finally, the guards' voices began to fade, their tired murmurs growing quieter with each passing minute. As the last traces of consciousness slipped away, Nadia and I exchanged a silent nod, our resolve steeling as we prepared to make our escape. With bated breath, we slipped out of our hiding spot and crept past the sleeping guards, our footsteps light as feathers on the rusty leaves, running as fast as we could into the woods even if we had no place in mind, we stopped for a while and the crisp night air hit us like a wave, and we both inhaled deeply, our lungs finally able to expand after hours of being cramped in the tiny tunnel. The moonlight bathed the surrounding fields in an ethereal glow, and for a moment, we simply stood there, soaking it all in. Nadia and I exchanged a triumphant smile, our hearts soaring with the joy of escape. With laughter bubbling up from deep within us, we danced beneath the moonlit sky, our voices raised in a joyful chorus of celebration. We embraced each other tightly even if we knew we only had till morning before they came searching for us. After our celebratory pause, we continued running till our last breath. Exhausted from our flight, we stumbled beneath the shelter of a tree, sinking to the ground with a deep sigh of relief. We were safe for the moment, but we knew that our journey was far from over. As the soft rays of dawn filtered through the trees, Nadia's gentle touch woke up me from my sleep. Blinking sleepily, I struggled to shake off the remnants of exhaustion that clung to my eyelids." We need to start moving," she said quietly, looking around. I was still half awake, not ready to start my day, "Already, I still feel tired, can't I sleep a little more?"" Didn't you say we needed to move early" her voice turned with embodiment of fear. Reluctantly, I dragged myself to my feet, my muscles protesting as I rose from the forest floor. The racket of chirping birds and rustling leaves surrounded us, a stark contrast to the tension that hung heavy in the air. As we prepared to depart, the distant sound of hoof-beats echoed through the tranquil morning. My heart tripped in my chest, and I exchanged a panicked glance with Nadia. Without a moment's hesitation, I snatched her hand, and together we bolted into the dense undergrowth. We ran faster than we had ever run before, our lungs burning as we gulped down great mouthfuls of air. Our feet thumped on the earth, sending up a cloud of dust that hung around us like a shroud. But we didn't dare look back. The sound of the horse's hooves grew closer and closer until it felt as though they were right behind us. Panic seized us, and we ran even faster, our limbs aching with exertion. We saw a big tree and decided to hide behind it, praying it would shield us. As we plastered ourselves to the tree, tears started to drop from Nadia's eyes and I started to feel guilty. I pushed her because I was selfish. I should have turned when she asked us to. A glimmer of hope flickered as the sound of hoof beats ceased. Peering cautiously around the edge of the tree, I caught a glimpse of the horse and its rider. My heart leaped into my throat, and I quickly ducked back into hiding, my breath coming in ragged gasps. The voice that followed sent shivers down my spine, chilling me to the core. "You can't hide forever," it taunted. With each passing second, the threat of discovery hung over larger, and I clung to Nadia's trembling form. We huddled closer to the tree, hoping that he wouldn't see us. But then, to our horror, we heard the sound of approaching footsteps. He was coming towards us! We held our breath, not daring to move a muscle. The footsteps came closer and closer until they stopped right next to the tree. We could hear the man breathing heavily, and we could almost feel his eyes on us. Seconds later, he appeared before us, Nadia released my hand and fled, leaving me rooted to the spot, my chest heaving with fear. We locked eyes, tension crackling between us as My mind raced, searching desperately for an escape plan, while his gaze bore into me, his intentions unclear. Then, in a heartbeat, I felt a spark ignite within me.
