Prologue
I stood at the window of my bedroom, gazing out at the twinkling lights of the estate's gardens. The darkness of the night was suffocating, like a heavy blanket wrapped around the city. My mind was elsewhere, consumed by the weight of my family's legacy. My father, Don Morano, was a man feared by many. His sharp jawline, piercing blue eyes, and chiselled features made him a commanding presence. But I knew the truth behind his polished facade – a ruthless determination to protect our family's empire at any cost.
As I stood there, lost in thought, my phone buzzed on the nightstand. I walked over to silence it, my eyes scanning the screen. A text from my best friend, Sophia – a petite, bubbly girl with curly brown hair and bright green eyes. Her message read: "Meet me at the usual place tomorrow. We need to talk."
My heart skipped a beat. Sophia never used the phrase "we need to talk" unless it was serious. I quickly typed out a response: "What's going on?"
The response came almost immediately: "Just be there, Ale. Trust me."
My mind was racing with possibilities. What could Sophia possibly want to discuss that required such secrecy? I tried to push the thoughts aside, focusing on the upcoming charity gala my family was hosting. But the sense of unease lingered, like a shadow in the corner of my room.
Just as I was about to drift off to sleep, I heard the sound of my father's voice outside my door. "Alessia, we need to talk."
My heart sank. What now? I knew that tone – firm, commanding, and slightly irritated.
"Come in," I called out, my voice steady.
The door opened, and my father stood in the doorway, his eyes piercing. His dark hair was slicked back, revealing a prominent widow's peak. He was a tall man, imposing, and always impeccably dressed. "Alessia, I've made arrangements for you to meet someone tomorrow. Someone important."
I felt a shiver run down my spine. "Who is it?" I asked, trying to keep my tone neutral.
"You'll find out tomorrow," my father replied, his expression unreadable. "Just be ready. And Alessia?"
"Yes?"
"Don't disappoint me."
With that, he turned and left, leaving me with a sense of foreboding. What had I gotten myself into?
As I lay in bed, my mind racing with possibilities, I couldn't shake off the feeling that my life was about to change forever.
And then, just as I was drifting off to sleep, my phone buzzed again. This time, it was an unknown number: "Tomorrow, you'll meet your fate."
My heart stopped. Who was this? And what did they want from me?
The darkness closed in around me, and I knew that tomorrow would bring more than just a meeting, it would bring a reckoning.
The Morning after…
I woke up to the sound of my alarm blaring in my ear. Groggily, I reached over to turn it off, my mind still foggy from the lack of sleep. The events of the previous night replayed in my head – the mysterious text from Sophia, the ominous warning from my father, and the unknown number's chilling message.
As I got out of bed, I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror. My long, dark hair was tangled, and my eyes looked tired. I rubbed the sleep from my eyes and began to get ready for the day.
My family's estate was bustling with activity as I made my way downstairs. The staff was busy preparing for the charity gala, and the smell of freshly baked pastries wafted through the air. I grabbed a cup of coffee and headed to the garden, where I knew I'd find Sophia waiting for me.
The sun was shining brightly as I walked through the gardens, the sound of birds chirping and water fountains soothing my frazzled nerves. Sophia was already there, sipping on a latte and looking like she hadn't a care in the world.
"Hey, girl!" she said, as I sat down beside her. "What's going on? You look like you've seen a ghost."
I took a deep breath and filled her in on the events of the previous night – the text from my father, the mysterious message, and my growing sense of unease. Sophia listened intently, her expression growing more serious by the minute.
"Do you think it's related to your father's business?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
I hesitated, unsure of how much to reveal. My father's empire was built on shady dealings and ruthless tactics. I knew that much, but I didn't want to believe that he would put me in harm's way.
"I don't know," I admitted. "But I have a feeling that tomorrow's meeting is going to change everything."
Sophia nodded, her eyes sparkling with determination. "We'll get to the bottom of this, Ale. Together."
As we chatted, I couldn't shake off the feeling that we were being watched. I glanced around the garden, but saw nothing out of the ordinary. Still, the sense of unease lingered.
"Let's get out of here," I said, standing up. "I need some fresh air."
Sophia nodded, and we walked out of the estate, into the bright sunlight. Little did I know, our lives were about to take a dramatic turn.
