The Unexpected Proposal

Chapter Five As we drove through the quiet streets, the tension between us was palpable. Matteo's anger still simmered beneath the surface, and I couldn't help but wonder what had triggered it. When we arrived at my doorstep, Matteo turned off the engine and turned to me. "I'll walk you to the door," he said, his voice low. I nodded, feeling a sense of gratitude. As we stepped out of the car, the cool night air enveloped us, and I shivered. Matteo's eyes locked onto mine, and for a moment, I thought I saw a glimmer of something there, something that looked almost like...concern. But it was quickly replaced by his usual confident smile. As we reached the door, my father appeared, his expression serious. "Matteo, thank you for bringing Alessia home," he said, his voice formal. Matteo nodded, his eyes never leaving mine. "It was my pleasure," he said, his voice smooth. My father cleared his throat, and I sensed a shift in the atmosphere. "Matteo and I need to talk to you, Alessia," he said, his voice grave. I felt a sense of trepidation as we stepped inside. What was going on? As we sat down in the living room, Matteo's expression turned serious. "Alessia, your father and I have been discussing a way to secure a truce between our families," he said, his voice low. I felt a sense of confusion. What did that have to do with me? And what truce are they even talking about? Matteo took a deep breath, his eyes locked onto mine. "We've decided that the best way to do that is for us to get married." I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. Married? To Matteo? It was unthinkable. But before I could protest, my father spoke up. "It's the only way, Alessia. Our families have been at odds for years. This is the only way to bring peace." I felt a sense of desperation creeping in. Was this really the only way? Just as I was about to refuse, Matteo's phone rang again. He answered, his expression darkening. "What is it?" he barked. As he listened, his face twisted in anger. "You're sure?" he asked, his voice low. I watched him, feeling a sense of unease. What was going on? Matteo's eyes locked onto mine, and I saw a glimmer of something there, something that looked almost like...fear. "We have a problem," he said, his voice low. "My sister, Bella, has been kidnapped. And the kidnapper demands that I call off the marriage to you, Alessia, in exchange for her safe return." I felt a surge of shock. Kidnapped? What was going on? And what did Bella's kidnapping have to do with our marriage? How did they even know he just proposed? Some things aren’t just adding up. As I looked at Matteo, I saw a side of him that I hadn't seen before. A side that was vulnerable, scared, and desperate. And in that moment, I knew that I had to make a decision. Would I agree to the marriage, or would I refuse? And what would be the consequences of my choice? Matteo's eyes seemed to bore into mine, his expression desperate. "I'll do whatever it takes to get her back," he said, his voice low and urgent. I felt a pang of sympathy for him, although I was still reeling from the news of our “proposed marriage”. Kidnapping was a serious crime, and I knew that Matteo would stop at nothing to rescue his sister. "What do we do now?" I asked, trying to process the situation. Matteo's face twisted in anger. "I'll find out who's behind this and make them pay," he growled. My father's expression was grim. "We need to be careful, Matteo. We don't know who's involved or what their demands are." Matteo's eyes narrowed. "I'll handle it. I'll get Bella back, no matter what it takes." As we sat there in silence, the tension was palpable. I knew that our lives were about to change in ways we couldn't even imagine. Suddenly, Matteo's phone beeped. He looked at the screen, his expression darkening. "It's a video," he said, his voice low. He played the video, and I felt a surge of horror. Bella was on the screen, her eyes wide with fear. A man stood behind her, a knife to her throat. "Call off the marriage, Matteo," the man sneered. "Or Bella dies." I felt a chill run down my spine. This was serious. Who was behind this, and what did they want? Matteo's face was twisted in rage. "I'll do whatever it takes to save her," he growled. But as I looked at him, I saw something in his eyes that gave me pause. A glimmer of calculation, of strategy. Was Matteo's desire to save his sister genuine, or was there more to it? Matteo's eyes seemed to bore into mine, his expression intense. "I'll do whatever it takes to save Sofia," he repeated. But I couldn't shake off the feeling that there was more to this situation than met the eye. Why would someone kidnap Bella and demand that Matteo call off our marriage? As I looked at my father, I saw a mixture of concern and calculation in his eyes. "We need to think this through," he said. "We can't just rush into anything." Matteo's face twisted in frustration. "We don't have time to think," he said. "Bella's life is at stake." I felt a surge of fear. What if we couldn't save Bella? What if something went terribly wrong? Just as it seemed like the situation couldn't get any more complicated, the doorbell rang. My father got up to answer it, and I heard a low murmur of voices. When he returned, his expression was grim. "It's Luca," he said. "He says he has information about Bella's kidnapping." Matteo's eyes narrowed. "What kind of information?" he asked. My father's expression was tense. "He wouldn't say. But he insists on speaking with you directly." Matteo's face darkened. "I'll talk to him," he said, his voice low and menacing. As Matteo stood up to go, I felt a sense of unease. What did Luca know, and what did he want? And could we trust him? As Matteo left the room, I turned to my father. "What's going on?" I asked. "What do you know about Bella's kidnapping?" My father's expression was guarded. "I'm not sure, Alessia. But I think there's more to this than meets the eye." I felt a shiver run down my spine. What secrets were my father and Matteo keeping from me? And what lay ahead for us?
