They did not speak in the car. Without a phone, Kyle could not book a taxi, and he felt in no way able to walk home. He sat in Jessica’s car beside her in the backseat and stared out the window. He watched the buildings pass and disappear, replaced by identical buildings, all alabaster white, formulaic in their construction, the only differences being the signs atop their doors. Their windows so clean that they reflected perfectly each pedestrian strolling past on this Saturday morning. A suffocating heat rose within Kyle.
