The interview room was almost as sparse as Janus’s cell. There was a table, a chair on one side of the table where Janus was sitting and two other chairs opposite which were occupied by Detective Sergeant Annette Bowers and Detective Constable Colin Calderson. An additional chair was brought in for Richard, who had been permitted to attend the interview.
DS Bowers identified those in the room for the benefit of the audio and video recordings. She didn’t feel entirely comfortable with Richard in the room – she felt like she was being appraised – but she had no choice in the matter. She spoke to Janus directly.
