Chapter 8 Playing Tricks

"David asked me to marry him," she blotted out almost immediately not willing to drag it any further, Smith's jaw dropped immediately, his gaze still on Mica, he is trying to comprehend what she just said to him and he is hoping that this is one of her silly jokes, "do not tell me that you are serious, Mica," Smith slowly let go of her hand seeing how serious she looked.

He peered at her steadily as he wanted to make sure his eyes were not playing tricks on him, "are you being serious now, Mica?" He bent over to gaze into her eyes.

Mica stared back into his eyes trying to look confident, she does not want to give him any reason to turn David's offer down, "yes, Smith, you heard me," she said, still looking into his eyes.

"You cannot be serious, Mica this wasn't the plan," Smith snapped, standing up from the bed, "you and I agreed that you are only going to go to his house in the pretence to comfort him after you said you are sure that he is going to drown himself in alcohol, you were only supposed to take pictures of the both of you pretending to make out, that was the key to our getting money from him, what is this marriage thing you are talking about?" Smith yelled furiously, unable to believe his ears, he cannot imagine Mica getting married to another man let alone that wealthy David.

"Yes, that was the plan, Smith, but he suddenly asked that I marry him, you see, and I think that it is a brilliant idea, that way we will not have to blackmail him any longer but I will be there as his wife and find a way to get control of his money," Mica replied, trying to control the anger rising inside of her, she needs to convince him to agree to this as she has made up her mind already to go along with David's plan, she knew his motive for wanting to marry her and she is going to capitalise on that.

Smith curled his palms into a fist, his heart racing after hearing Mica say that David's idea to marry her was a brilliant idea, he could remember asking Mica to marry him once but she turned him down immediately saying he has nothing to his name to talk to her about marriage, he suddenly wished now that he had never agreed to this plan in the first place, "how can you say that, Mica? Don't tell me that you have already agreed to his proposal," Smith's gaze narrowed at her.

Mica felt a little sympathy for him now, especially after hearing him sound so emotional, she quickly brushed the thought away, reminding herself that that cannot pay their bills, she cannot live the kind of life she dreams of by being emotional or allowing Smith's emotions get to her, "Listen Smith, I am only saying that it will be better this way, think of the more money we are going to get from this," she was saying when Smith suddenly interrupted her, taking her of guard.

"Money, money, money, Mica, it's all you ever think of, how can you be so money conscious?" Smith snapped, but stopped himself again after seeing Mica's brows furrowed at him, "Look Mica there has to be another way, you cannot marry him, if he insists on marrying you, then, let's just call it off,," He walked closer to her and took her hands and squeezed them tenderly too.

Mica slowly pulled her hands away from his, feeling angry now at his insensitivity, "you are being insensitive right now, you have not heard the details yet and you want us to abort now, after we have come this far, do you not know how much money that man has?" Mica could not hold back her anger now and she wished she had accepted David's proposal already, she would have just told Smith about it after the marriage.

"I do not care how much money he has, Mica," Smith snapped at her again, feeling very frustrated right now.

"Well, I do care, Smith, and you should too, think about the kind of life you are going to live with that man's money, you should be thankful to me, you know," Mica retorted, and continues before Smith could speak, "David gave me until tomorrow morning to reply to his proposal else he is going to ask another woman to marry him, is that what you want? For another woman to reap off my plan, our plan, I am not going to let that happen, not when I have gotten this far,"

"Did you have s*x with him?" Smith suddenly asked interrupting Mica, he wanted to know why David suddenly asks that she marry him.

Mica paused her lips and tilted her head backward, she has to be careful with her choice of words now in other not to ruin things for herself, she remembered Smith asked her emphatically about this part of the plan and she remember assuring him that she is not going to have s*x with David, she was only supposed to make it seen like they had s*x after David must have drowned himself in alcohol, "are you seriously asking me that question right now?" She suddenly pretended to be very offended right now, "how can you ask me that after we have gone through it? You are impossible, Smith," Mica yelled, turning towards the door but Smith rushed to her immediately, grabbing on to her hands.

"I am sorry, Mica, I shouldn't have asked you that," he said apologetically, gazing into her eyes, "I am only curious to know why he would want you to marry him all of a sudden,"

"What else? If not to get back at Karen for cheating on him," Mica slowly pulled her hands away from him wondering why he wouldn't use his brains properly, "it is like you have not been paying attention to what I am saying, if I do not agree to marry him, he will marry another woman, and believe me, any woman would jump at the offer," She added.

Smith lowered his head feeling very hurt right now, he wished he has money all of a sudden, all this wouldn't be happening if he do, at least Mica would have jumped at his proposal to marry him just as she is willing to marry her friends husband, he wonders if Karen was really her friend, "how about your friend, I mean, what are you going to do about her given that you are planning on marrying her husband?" Smith peered at her as if that question is going to knock Mica back to her senses, he had asked her then how all this is going to affect Karen given that she is her best friend, Mica had replied him that, it is only going to last for about a day or two which will give then enough time to carry out her plan, she has promised to clear the misunderstanding which will allow Karen go back to her husband, he had agreed to it too after Mica told him that David loves his wife Karen so much and that something as petty as this would not bring them apart.

Mica stared at Smith, she thinks she knew what he was thinking about, "do not worry about Karen, Smith, I am going to take care of that, she will be alright soon," she peered right back at him.

Smith lifted his brows immediately, still peering back into her eyes, afraid of the true meaning of her statement, "And what do you mean by that, if I may ask?" Smith couldn't help but wonder what she meant by her statement, as it dawned on him that Mica might as well leave him to be with David.
