The great hall doors flew open with a heavy bang as King Darius Thorne strode in like he owned the place and everything in it.
Tall and broad shouldered, with scars crossing his face and arms, he radiated raw power and danger. Every step made the floor seem to shake under his boots. The delegation parted for him. His dark eyes swept the room and locked straight on Astrid.
"I am King Darius Thorne," he said, voice deep and commanding. "I received your message, Viktor. The marriage alliance is accepted. Astrid comes with me today as my bride. The deal is set."
The hall went dead silent for a heartbeat. Then noise erupted again from every corner.
Kieran pushed forward, face twisted with jealousy. "You cannot just take her. She belongs here with us. This is too sudden and too much."
Darius looked at him like he was nothing. "She requested this alliance herself. I claim her now. The deal is done. Your opinion changes nothing."
Astrid stepped closer to the King, heart pounding hard. "Yes. I am ready to leave with you, King Darius."
Kieran turned to her, voice rising. "Astrid, please. I made mistakes but do not do this. Do not leave with him. He is a monster from the east who destroys everything he touches."
She met his eyes coldly. "You lost the right to say anything when you chose Liora and called me a stray in front of the pack. I am done here. Done with all of it."
Darius crossed his arms over his broad chest. "The girl has spoken. Your protests mean nothing to me, boy. Step aside before you embarrass yourself more."
Viktor approached slowly, looking older and tired. "King Darius, I give my reluctant blessing. Take care of her. She has been like a daughter to me despite everything that went wrong between us."
Darius nodded once. "She will be treated as queen. My word on that. We leave at first light tomorrow after we settle the alliance terms properly."
Draven shouted from where the guards held him tight. "This is perfect. Let the stray go. She never belonged anyway. Good riddance to her."
"Silence him," Viktor ordered sharply. "He stays detained for his betrayal. No more words from him tonight or I will make it worse."
Astrid felt a rush of vindication mixed with sharp fear. Darius turned to her directly. "You showed strength by making this choice. I respect that. Most would not dare challenge their own pack like you did."
"Thank you," she said, voice steady even though her pulse raced. "I want a real alliance. Not empty promises like the ones I had here."
Darius gave a small, rare smile that softened his scarred face just a little. "Good. I do not make empty promises. You will stand beside me as equal in strength. That is my way. No one will call you stray again."
Kieran tried again, stepping closer. "Father, stop this. Astrid, think about what you are doing. He will use you and toss you aside when he is done. You know nothing about him."
Darius cut in cold and sharp. "Enough. She made her choice. You had your chance and wasted it. Leave her be or I will make you regret opening your mouth."
Astrid felt a strange pull toward the King. His respect felt real and solid. He looked at her like she had value beyond the past. "I am not changing my mind, Kieran. This is my path now. Accept it."
Viktor sighed deeply. "Then it is settled. We will prepare the documents tonight. Astrid, I am sorry for how things turned. My protection failed you in the end when it mattered most."
"You tried your best," she replied. "But I need more than protection. I need respect. Darius offers that without question."
Darius spoke to his men. "Prepare the escort. We take her home soon. The alliance begins now with clear terms."
One of the delegates asked, "What about the traitor and the woman who helped him?"
"Detain them until we leave," Darius said. "Silverfang can deal with its own mess. My bride does not need their poison anymore. She has had enough."
Draven struggled against the guards. "You will regret taking her. She brings nothing but trouble wherever she goes. Mark my words."
"Quiet," Viktor snapped. "You have done enough damage to this pack already."
Kieran stood frozen, watching as Darius spoke quietly with Astrid. "You really choose him over me? After everything we shared?"
"I choose myself," Astrid answered firmly. "For the first time in years. You took that choice away from me too many times."
Darius placed a hand on her shoulder, firm but not rough. "You have courage. I saw the messages your people brought. You exposed the rot here. That takes spine. You will do well in my court. I have no doubt."
Astrid felt heat rise in her cheeks. His unflinching respect stirred something new and warm in her chest. Fear still lingered but so did excitement for what lay ahead. "I hope I prove worthy of your respect, King Darius."
"You already have," Darius said simply. "The rest we build together. One day at a time."
Viktor watched them, humbled and quiet. "Take her safely, King Darius. She deserves better than what we gave her here at the end."
The King nodded. "She will have it. Tomorrow we ride. Tonight we talk terms and make the alliance strong."
Kieran tried one last time, voice cracking. "Astrid, please..."
She turned away. "Goodbye, Kieran. I wish you well but our story is over."
The hall buzzed with whispers as the Lycan King's men stood guard. Draven was dragged away still protesting loudly. Astrid stood beside Darius, feeling the weight of her choice settle on her shoulders. Vindication burned bright inside her. Fear whispered warnings in her ear. But the strange attraction to his raw power and genuine respect for her strength felt like the start of something real and powerful.
Darius leaned closer. "No regrets about this path?"
"None," she said firmly, meeting his eyes.
The night stretched ahead full of new shadows and new power. Astrid had been claimed by the King. And for the first time she felt ready for whatever came next on this dangerous road.
