I woke up to yet another series of loud knocks on the door. My brows furrowed, and I started to turn when Nikolai pulled me to him, enveloping me in his body so I was safely tucked into him. "They will go away if we ignore them long enough." I laughed, then nodded, nuzzling my face into his chest. He was right. After a while, the knocks stopped, and I settled back to sleep again, my lips parting slowly. I woke up much later to a delightful soreness all over, and I broke into a big smile as I stretched. The smile, however, disappeared as my hand came up empty. Nikolai was not in bed. I sat up just as the sound of the shower came, immediately sending waves of relief through me.
