Prologue
*Unknown POV *
I sat near the back and observed. This was the biggest gathering of our kind I'd ever seen. Our numbers were bigger than I had imagined. It only meant that it was time. We no longer needed to hide in the shadows.
"-ve gathered here today, companions, because it is time. We have chosen who will become food, and who shall become one of us."
"This is insanity!" a figure appeared from the shadows. It was one of the ancient ones. "We have existed in peace with the humans. Hunt responsibly. If we do this, we may as well starve ourselves!"
Murmurs began to rise, many covens shaking their heads and discussing together.
The ancient one that had spoken up had separated from from the other four hundreds of years before. No one knew why.
"Lazo, glad to have you join us, " grumbled one of the four at the head table. "But we have everything under control. You have been on your own, hidden, without knowing what is going on in the world. We vampires are in danger."
"Danger from what, exactly?" Lazo tilted his head lazily. "Humans are ignorant. They can't separate truth from fiction."
"It's why it is time," grunted another ancient one. "We used to be more than fiction. We were feared!"
"Yes, until they learned how to fight back," Lazo rolled his eyes. "And that was before all this technology and weapons they have created."
I looked down at my phone; it was getting late. I had to get to work soon but today the decision was going to be made. I had to stay.
To Trish:
Hey, running late, can you cover for me?
Trish:
You owe me
Me:
Hardly. I've covered for you plenty.
Trish:
Ugh, whatever.
I smirked and looked up again. The ancient one, Lazo, was gone. Everyone was silent and looking up at the table of ancient ones.
"Tomorrow we shall begin! Tomorrow, we shall silently start taking in those we shall need to turn. This, muy brothers and sisters, is our time. We shall no longer be romanticized stories! We will be the apex predators. We will rule this planet!"
Cheers erupted all around me. Thirst and excitement filled the room.
"We no longer will have to limit ourselves to what we can eat! We can hunt freely. Live where we want to!"
"But, " hissed another, quieting everyone. "everyone must do as instructed. Every coven will be given list of names of the humans they shall change. Discretion is still important for phase one. No one, and we mean no one! Is allowed to turn someone who isn't on a list"
I sighed and looked over at my coven leader. He had a list in hand, and knew it would be divided and passed around later. I only hope she was on the list. She couldn't become food.
