Chapter 1
Green lights were flickering down all around Kota and I as the band exited the stage. The curtains fell as the room applauded, and whistles blew past us. “That was probably their best one, don’t ya think?!” Kota beamed up at me with a grin the entire length of her face. “Oh hell yeah, the rift jack played was spot on! Had me about drooling!” I muttered out hoarsely. The show had already taken most of my voice. I watched as Kota danced over to two guys who were hanging around us for the majority of the night with wandering eyes. She seemed pretty fond of the one with black hair and dark eyes. The two seemed to envelope into one another perfectly, and everything around them turned into nothing it seemed. Kota and I have been friends since we were 7. That was 20 years ago. She was always the very bright and outgoing one, whereas I was the more withheld and shy one. I’ve always felt very out of place considering I was adopted by one of the most established families in Los Angeles, but was raised more so by the house maid, Ren. Ren was basically my mother and the one person I had to look up to until she passed away four months ago. She always told me I was something special and that in time the truth would reveal itself. When I received a letter addressed to me from Ren after her passing telling me to travel to Seattle with some money she had left for me, I had no idea that I would still be here with Kota two months later without any answers. “Hey Sam!! Would you like be okay if I went with Chris back to his place tonight?” Kota yelled over while Chris kissed her neck lightly. “Sure, go get it girl!” As I picked up my drink and glanced over at the bartender to ask for the tab my chest tightened and my my hands clenched into my glass, the shards jutting into my palm and my blood trickled down onto the counter. “Ohhh uhh, my gosh! I have no idea what happened! I’m so, so, sorry!” “Are you alright?” the bartender asked very concerned. “Yeah, I have no idea how that happened. I must have set it down too hard. I’m such a clutz!” “Here is …” Why was my wallet such a mess?! I really hope I have enough to cover our tab! “Ah! Here’s $45.00. Thanks!” I basically shouted as I rushed away from the counter. I could feel my cheeks blushing at the embarrassment of the moment. I just wanted to get out of there. It was colder than I remembered outside. People were still hanging around outside the club talking, some kissing, and some just awkwardly standing. Two guys looked very concerning right off the bat. I shrugged at the thought and held my head up and acted like I had my s**t together when I in fact, did not have it together. How much had I drank? Maybe I should grab a cab. I stood near the street and put my arm out in hopes a cab would come to my rescue but weirdly there wasn’t one in sight. What time was it even? I glanced at my watch. “1 am!” I gasped under my breath. I remembered someone in school saying that nothing good ever happens after 1 am. I hope I can make it to the hotel myself. The streets all looked the same it seemed, and the cafes all resembled one another. Part of me wanted to retreat back to the club to see if I could still scope out Kota and get back to the hotel somehow. Then I heard the foot steps, stalking behind me. The sound of a chain brushing alongside jeans and coming up at a swift pace. I turned my head slightly trying not to draw much attention. It was the same two guys from outside the club, they were following me! I turned forward and looked anywhere for somewhere to go, someone to go to for help. I picked up my pace. They picked up their pace as well. There was no one in sight and no place to go, I could feel my heart pounding out of my chest. This was it, I hit a dead end alley. “ No where for you to go little rabbit! You’re in our territory now” shouted one. “I can smell you from a mile away” the other said in a disgusting tone. “Please, you can take my purse! I don’t have much. You can have my necklace as well. Please, don’t hurt me!” I stuttered between breaths. “We don’t want your purse, or your money. You know EXACTLY what we want!” said the one with a black mohawk who stepped forward out of the shadows. “I’m sorry, I don’t know .. oh gosh, please No!!” I now understood what they were talking about. They were going to r**e me! Oh god, please, no! I held my hand up as the one approached me, he got closer and I saw more of his face. His eyes turned yellow, bright neon yellow. He lifted his arm up above me. Before he brought it down on my head I saw headlights and a felt a huge rush of air fly past me before my head hit the ground.
