Chapter 10

799 Words
Vera showed herself to be following every rule and being the sweetest woman in the pack in the following weeks. It infuriated Anna, because she knew in her gut that Vera was up to something. She couldn't prove anything. It just made her feel crazy. Christian set up a double patrol on the border. No one could go in or out of the pack without a full rundown of why and ID checks. They were even patrolling the woods outside the pack grounds. Any suspicious activity was to be reported immediately and Christian and Trent would deal with it. Anna felt safe in her pack, but she knew it couldn't last until the threat was gone. She knew Vera had something to do with that threat. Anna was at her desk, working on paperwork for the pack, when Christian came up behind her. She turned and looked at him, waiting for him to speak. Things were still tense between them. "The other Alphas want to have an emergency meeting. Like our annual one, but less fanfair and more meeting." "Alright, when?" "Next week Monday. It could last a few days." "Who is hosting?" she asked. "That's the thing... I offered to host it." Anna looked away, staring out the window for a moment. Host it here? She wasn't ready. "Look, it doesn't need the big dinners and entertainment. Just feed the man and their wives, if they bring them, and set up accommodations for a few nights. That's it." "I've never hosted Alphas without the need to impress them," Anna said. "You'll still impress them. Make sure the rooms are fantastic and the food is the best we have to offer. Keep refreshments flowing during meetings. Just keep the rest low-key or nonexistent." She nodded. "Alright." Normally, he'd have consulted her first. But she wasn't going to bring that up now. This was the first time he had talked to her in days. She wasn't going to start a fight now. Instead, she stood and looked up at her husband. "How are you doing?" He sighed and looked tired. His shoulders slumped a little. "I'm okay. we're handling things." "You're handling everything well, but how are you doing in here?" she asked, touching his head. She ran her hand down his face and onto his shoulder. "Are you okay, really?" He shrugged. "I'm okay. This is exhausting and stressful, but I was built for this job." "You know you don't have to go it alone right? I'm still here. I'm still able to do this by your side." He looked at her warily. "You don't trust me." "What do you mean?" "You think I'm up Vera's skirt. You don't trust me." "I don't think you're up her's, I think she wants you to be and will continue to try to sway you." "Well, I haven't even seen her in awhile. She's moved on." "I hope you're right." "What more can be done to prove this to you?" he asked angrily. "Why are you upset about his? You wouldn't want a man trying to get my attention either," she defended herself. "I wouldn't, but if he was no longer an issue I'd be over it. Especially if you weren't entertaining his advances!" "Look, I'm pretty well over it. You're icing me out and that isn't okay." "I'm icing you out? When was the last time you touched me? Sought me out?" She couldn't believe that was his argument. "You haven't touched me or spoken to me. You avoid me entirely. Yet I'm the problem?" "Yes, you are." With that, he turned and walked away. Anna sat with a heavy sigh. Tears began to fall down her cheeks. Was she in the wrong? Was she out of her mind when it came to Vera? She rubbed her eyes. She'd focus on the Alphas coming to visit, and then she'd worry about Christian and Vera. It was Wednesday, she had limited time. First, she went to the kitchen and informed them of what would be needed. They promised to get a menu written up for her approval by that night. She set an Omega that worked for the packhouse to airing out and dusting the rooms the Alphas would stay in. She assigned a room to each couple... and one single room for Damian. The Alpha with no Luna, the Alpha that seemed to give her more attention than she felt appropriate. A chill ran down her spine. She made a mental note to avoid him as much as possible. She didn't want any rumors to swirl or for Christian to see it as her being hypocritical. As usual, in bed that night, Christian rolled away from her and fell asleep quickly. Anna lay awake wondering how to fix things with him.
