The Alphas arrived bright and early Monday morning. Anna and Christian stood in the foyer to greet them. It was painfully obvious to her that he was standing as far away from her as he could without drawing too much attention to it. Usually, he'd be holding her hand or pulling her close. Showing her as the prize he felt she was. But not now... Each Alpha couple came through the door, was greeted and shown to their rooms. Damian arrived last. He walked in alone, startlingly handsome. He still made Anna uneasy.
Damian formally greeted Christian with a firm handshake and curt nod. When he moved toward Anna he took her hand and slowly kissed it. "A pleasure to see you again, Anna," he said.
She pulled her hand back. "I hope you enjoy your stay," she said simply.
Damian winked at her as he walked away with a staff member to be shown his room.
Christian looked at Anna with a look of disgust before he walked toward the meeting rooms.
Anna sighed. Damian was going to make a big mess of things, she knew it. She needed to find Christian and fix this. She walked down the halls toward the meeting rooms. He was likely in there preparing. She checked the bigger one, he wasn't there, so she checked the next one. He was in there alright. And so was Vera. She was sitting on the edge of a table, her skirt pulled up showing off every inch of leg she had. He was standing before her, not touching her, but he wans't ordering her out either.
Anna backed away from the window. She ran upstairs to their room and shut the door. She paced her room, her mind spinning.
The door slammed open, she turned and jumped.
"What were you doing spying on me?" Christian demanded.
"Spying? I wasn't spying! I went to find you, but you were occupied."
"After you were all over that Alpha prick, the weird one, you don't have a right to come for me!"
"Christian, I wasn't all over him. He took my hand, I snatched it back. Should I have slapped him?"
"I don't know! Why is he acting like this? We've seen him plenty of times for years. Now he's trying to get your attention?"
Anna shrugged. "I don't know. All I know is it is not welcome. I am not encouraging it."
"You think I am? With Vera?"
"Why don't you tell me?"
Christian turned and faced the window. He ran his hand over his hair. "Look, I hadn't seen her in awhile. I didn't lie about that. She is still not allowed in the packhouse. I guess she thoughts with all the Alpha's coming she could slip in. I don't know. She found me right before you did and she put on the moves."
"I saw that..."
"I was telling her she couldn't be there when we looked up and saw you running off. She tried to hold me back, but I took off after you."
"Where is she now?" Anna asked.
"On her way home if she knows what's good for her."
"Christian..." Anna began. "I don't like what's going on between us. This rift..."
He walked toward her and pulled her toward him. "I don't either. Let's try to put it behind us? Let's start over."
She smiled and buried her head in his chest. "I want nothing more."
For the first time in a long time, they went to bed together and didn't just sleep.
Morning came all too quickly. They dressed and went down to make sure they were the first at the dining hall. They needed to greet their guests. Hand in hand, they greeted each one and made sure they felt welcomed. Breakfast was served and everyone settled in. It wasn't the grand event meetings usually had, but it was no less delicious.
Anna sat with Christian and another couple. Damian sat at a table by himself. Anna was happy he didn't try to slip in next to her.
After breakfast, the first meeting began. Developments Anna hadn't heard about were discussed. Bears coming down from the mountains in higher numbers and foxes were on the move. No one knew what they were up to, just that they had seens signs of them moving around, old camps throughout the woods that smelled of fox.
"We're simply going to have to find some foxes, take them and interrogate them," Christian said.
"Don't you have a fox living in your pack?" Damian said.
All eyes turned to Christian.
"Well, yes... I do. She lived here as a child and young teen, she has returned."
"So? Interrogate her," Damian said.
"You think we haven't? She doesn't know anything."
"Are you sure about that?" one of the Alphas asked. "If she's too close to you, you might be biased."
"She was an old friend, yes." Christian glanced at Anna. "But she is nothing to me now. Years stretched between us, lives moved on, she's less to me than even the most regular pack members. Rest assured, my men didn't spare her."
"Alright, alright, but we should get our hands on some foxes who are in the know," one of the Alphas answered.
"A task force can be set up. Only the best, highest clearance warriors from each pack can be involved."
Everyone agreed and plans began.
That night, Anna was more than happy to put her head on her pillow and go to sleep.
