“General Mayern!” Gordon turned to look over his shoulder, one leg already in the stirrup of his horse. Their group was almost ready to depart and the heavy air around them was spreading faster than he liked, sucking the color out of the soldiers’ faces and bringing their fears out. He could hear them whispering to each other, their hands shaking as they squeezed their weapons. The demon army wasn’t visible from the West Gate, but they could clearly hear them, which only amplified their fear. Or maybe it was better that way, considering what had crossed his mind when he stood at the main gate and watched those vile creatures step out of the forest in perfect lines.
