Outline
Elara runs into her mate on the street in town and her body starts to transition right then. Zane, her mate, manages to pull her into obscurity before her body explodes into wolf form. He tries to comfort her, remaining human despite her thrashing and attacks, and eventually manages to help her shift back. He is concerned by her lack of knowledge surrounding werewolf culture, he's never heard of a werewolf shifting so late in life for the first time. He tells her that it's not safe for her to return home and she shifts again, unable to control the transition as fear and shock run through her.
Once calmed, Zane takes her to his pack's house and she finds herself immersed in a brand new world where everyone seems to live by different rules. Unlike the stories she's seen written about werewolves, she finds the house to be an oddly peaceful place with meditation spaces, fountains, and serene colors. She asks Zane about this and he mentions how all werewolves have to learn how not to shift, that they have discovered that life is much better when their human halves remain in control during most circumstances. Strict training is required in order to not allow minor stresses to force a transition and such training requires meditation, thought management, and emotional control.
Elara wonders if she will ever be able to control her animal side, and the worry is sufficient that she transitions again. Zane does his best to reign in the destruction as she barrels through the house and then he traps her in a garden and proceeds to calm her down again.
Zane wonders why Elara is having such a hard time controlling her transitions, even as a new wolf, most new wolfs don't shift at even the slightest negative emotion the way she seems to. He wonders if it's because she is high-strung or if it has something to do with her lack of transformations up to this point.
Elara doesn't seem to improve with time and she eventually locks herself up in the basement. Zane tries to convince her to come back out, but she doesn't want to keep putting people in danger. And while no one faults her transitions, he can't really argue that she isn't posing something of a threat to the other members of the house. Zane reemphasizes his research, trying to find a reason why her path seems to be so difficult and why her wolf didn't appear until now.
As he buries himself in research, the first attack occurs. The house is attacked by fanged, white mutant creatures. They appear humanoid in form, but don't have the usual facial features, apart from a massive mouth. The creatures seem to head right for the basement as if they know that Elara is there.
Deciding that his efforts aren't sufficient, Zane decided to take Elara and travel to the werewolf hall of records. His pack accompanies him, and it's a good thing they do as they face several attacks along the way, including an encounter with members of other werewolf packs. Zane wonders if his pack is the only one who doesn't know what's going on with Elara.
At the hall of records, Zane discovers some information about fire wolves while Elara winds up in an underground labyrinth that tests her abilities for reasons unknown to her.
Reconnected, now the pack travels to the lost keep of the wolves in order to find remnant artifacts of a long, thought extinct, breed of werewolves. Once there, they find a necklace that helps cool Elara's shifting, but when they are attacked by shades, they also discover that the necklace activates a new ability within her, the ability to burn without being hurt and control the flame.
With the flame ability, Elara now has the right to rule.
