Chapter 5: The Awakening Flame
Mira’s fingers still tingled with the remnants of golden light, a warmth unlike anything she had ever known. Her breathing was uneven, her body trembling from the trial’s aftermath, but the knowledge settled deep in her bones: something inside her had changed.
Nyla studied her with an unreadable expression. “You felt it, didn’t you?”
Mira swallowed hard, nodding. “It—it was like something unlocked.”
Kai’s gaze was sharp. “You controlled it this time. That’s the difference.”
Mira opened her mouth to respond, but a sudden wave of dizziness crashed over her, forcing her to stumble. Kai caught her before she could collapse entirely. The warmth of his grip grounded her, but it also made her acutely aware of how drained she felt.
Nyla clicked her tongue. “Typical. You tapped into a power you weren’t ready for, and now your body’s paying the price.”
Mira exhaled sharply. “I didn’t exactly have a choice.”
“True,” Nyla admitted. “Still, you need to recover before we push forward. We don’t have time for you to collapse in the middle of the next challenge.”
Mira blinked at her. “Next challenge? I just survived this one!”
Nyla smirked. “And there’s more where that came from.”
Kai sighed. “Let her rest first, Nyla.”
For once, Nyla didn’t argue. Instead, she gestured toward the far end of the cavern, where a narrow passageway extended into the dark. “There’s a chamber ahead where you can recover. But don’t get too comfortable. You’ve only scratched the surface of what’s to come.”
---
The chamber was small but quiet, its walls etched with faded runes that pulsed faintly. Kai helped Mira sit on a stone ledge, watching her with something close to concern.
Mira let her head fall back against the cool stone. “This is insane,” she murmured. “A week ago, I was normal.”
Kai raised a brow. “You were never normal.”
Mira shot him a tired glare. “That’s not helping.”
He chuckled but didn’t push further. Silence settled between them until Mira finally asked the question weighing on her mind. “What was that place? The one in the trial?”
Kai hesitated. “I don’t know for sure. But whatever you saw—it wasn’t just in your head.”
Mira shivered. “I felt like something was watching me. Something… ancient.”
Kai nodded. “The power inside you—it’s tied to something old. Older than the Guardians, older than magic as we know it.”
Mira swallowed. “Then what does that make me?”
Kai didn’t answer.
---
Hours passed, and though Mira’s exhaustion lingered, her strength slowly returned. When Nyla reappeared, she carried a small, glowing crystal, which she tossed to Mira.
“Eat.”
Mira caught it, frowning. “This is a rock.”
Nyla rolled her eyes. “It’s an energy shard. It’ll help restore your strength.”
Mira eyed it warily before popping it into her mouth. To her surprise, it dissolved instantly, spreading warmth through her limbs.
Nyla clapped her hands. “Alright. Time for your next test.”
Mira groaned. “You’re kidding.”
“Do I look like I’m kidding?”
Kai smirked. “Better get up. She won’t let this go.”
Mira sighed, pushing herself to her feet. “Fine. What now?”
Nyla’s eyes gleamed. “Now? You fight.”
Mira’s stomach dropped. “Fight what?”
Nyla snapped her fingers, and the walls of the chamber began to shift. The runes flared, and suddenly, the floor beneath them was gone.
For the second time in twenty-four hours, Mira found herself falling.
---
She landed hard, the impact knocking the breath from her lungs. When she looked up, she realized she was in an arena.
The walls towered high above her, made of smooth obsidian stone, glowing symbols carved into their surface. Torches flickered in iron sconces, casting eerie shadows over the sand-covered ground.
And on the far side of the arena, something moved.
Mira scrambled to her feet as a low growl echoed through the space. Her heart pounded as she spotted the creature emerging from the shadows.
It was massive—easily eight feet tall, with dark, scaled skin and eyes that burned like molten gold. Its claws dug into the sand as it stalked forward, muscles coiling beneath its thick hide.
Mira took a step back. “Oh, come on.”
Above her, Nyla’s voice rang out. “You wanted training. Here it is. Survive, and you just might be ready for what’s coming next.”
Mira cursed under her breath. “I hate her.”
The beast lunged.
Mira dodged, barely avoiding the swipe of its claws. She rolled across the sand, coming up just in time to see it pivot toward her, its golden eyes locked onto her every movement.
She had no weapons. No plan. Just the lingering energy within her veins.
Think, Mira.
The runes. The magic had responded to her before. If she could tap into it again—
The beast roared, charging.
Mira raised her hands, willing the energy inside her to react. A flicker of golden light pulsed at her fingertips, but it was weak, unstable.
Not enough.
The beast’s claws slashed through the air—
And then Kai was there, intercepting the blow with a shimmering barrier of energy. The impact sent ripples of light through the air, and Mira gasped as Kai landed beside her.
“Focus!” he barked. “You can do this!”
Mira’s pulse thundered. The power was there, just out of reach. If she could only grasp it—
The beast lunged again.
This time, Mira didn’t retreat. Instead, she planted her feet and pulled at the magic within her.
Light erupted from her hands, a blinding arc of gold that struck the beast square in the chest. It howled, stumbling back as the energy crackled through its form.
Mira’s knees nearly buckled, but she held firm. The beast snarled, its molten eyes flickering—hesitating.
Kai moved beside her. “One more hit.”
Mira gritted her teeth. She drew on the power once more, channeling everything she had into a final burst.
The golden energy surged forward, engulfing the beast in a wave of light.
When the glow faded, the arena was silent.
The beast was gone.
Mira stood in the aftermath, chest heaving, body trembling.
Above her, Nyla’s voice rang out once more.
“Now that was impressive.”
